An Australian man is on trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, who was found burned to death in a car — and prosecutors say he tried to cover it up with a chilling text message.
Lachlan Young, 23, is accused of murdering 23-year-old Hannah McGuire and then staging her death to look like a suicide. The court heard that on April 5, 2024, Hannah’s mother, Debbie, received a text from her daughter’s phone in the early hours of the morning. The message read like a suicide note, saying, “I’m sorry mum, I thought this was the right decision… I tried messaging Lach but he doesn’t want anything to do with me now. Please check in on him — this is going to break his heart.”
But later that same day, Hannah’s body was found in a burned-out car in Scarsdale, Victoria. Authorities believe the text wasn’t written by Hannah at all — but by Young, after he allegedly killed her.
Debbie immediately tried to reach her daughter after getting the disturbing message, texting back multiple times and even going to the house Hannah and Young once shared. She knocked on the door and bedroom window but got no response. Instead, she ran into Young and his father on the street. Young acted surprised and claimed he also received strange texts from Hannah’s phone.
Prosecutors say Young went even further in trying to stage the scene. According to reports, he wired $5,000 to himself from Hannah’s account, and $2,000 to her parents — and pretended to be confused about the transfers. He’s admitted to sending the messages and wiring the money but insists the killing wasn’t premeditated.
Young was charged with murder three days after Hannah’s body was found. Another man, 22, was also arrested but later released.
Hannah’s family gave emotional testimony during the trial, describing a troubled relationship. They said she had recently made the decision to leave Young for good. Her father, Glenn, said he helped her meet with a solicitor and the bank to begin separating their finances. Just one day before her death, he saw her out with friends at a pub — it would be the last time.
In court, Hannah’s parents accused Young of being violent and controlling. Her mother reportedly texted after receiving the fake message, “You’re not going back to him… you can’t live the way you were living… remember why you left.”
The trial is ongoing.
