“The wife doesn’t like it. I have no feelings on it. I don’t have any feelings towards Ron. Almost 40 years; I know one thing—I’m disappointed.”
Don Cherry says he no longer considers longtime co-host Ron MacLean a friend, citing disappointment and hurt feelings over how MacLean handled Cherry’s controversial departure from Hockey Night in Canada.
In a recent interview at his home with Toronto Sun’s Joe Warmington, the 91-year-old legend in broadcasting was straight up when asked about his relationship with MacLean, his former loingtime co-anchor on Coach’s Corner.
“I’m very disappointed in Ron, disappointed he would bring this up,” Cherry said, referring to MacLean’s public comments suggesting Cherry’s firing in 2019 offered him a convenient exit.
Asked if he and MacLean still speak, Cherry said flatly, “No, we haven’t. No, I don’t really want to talk to Ron about this.”
Cherry also said MacLean is no longer welcome at his home. “The wife doesn’t like it. I have no feelings on it. I don’t have any feelings towards Ron. Almost 40 years; I know one thing—I’m disappointed.”
MacLean, in recent comments, had expressed that Cherry’s firing may have been for the best. “It was a bit clumsy, but it was the right outcome. Ultimately, that’s what needed to happen. It was liberating. Don needed out and the time was right,” MacLean said, adding, “Remembrance Day was his last swing, taking a stance that’s unpopular, but that feels good in his world.”
