Former Vice President Mike Pence has continued his attempts to remain visible within the Republican Party, largely by distancing himself from President Donald Trump. However, this ongoing criticism has not resonated well with the conservative base, particularly within the MAGA movement. During a recent interview on CNN, Pence weighed in on Trump’s foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing situation between Ukraine and Russia. He expressed support for the president’s stronger posture toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, while also attributing a waning influence among so-called isolationists in the Republican ranks.

The interview shifted focus when questions were raised about a temporary pause in U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine. According to recent reports, the decision was allegedly made without President Trump’s direct knowledge, with the order believed to have come from within the Pentagon and signed off by the Secretary of Defense. When asked about the matter, the president simply indicated he was unaware of the decision.

Pence acknowledged the complexities within large federal agencies but admitted the move appeared troubling while he speculated that President Trump would likely investigate the matter thoroughly to determine who initiated the pause. Nonetheless, Pence conceded that the reversal of the decision had already been made clear in a call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which Trump reportedly reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continued military support.

Pence further insisted that Ukraine would require more than defensive weapons, noting that offensive capabilities and protection against aerial assaults may be essential to establishing lasting peace in the region.

Former VP Mike Pence’s most recent appearance comes after he previously condemned Trump’s address in Saudi Arabia in May. Trump’s remarks denouncing earlier American military actions in the Middle East were criticized by the former vice president. Trump had argued that local people, not outside forces, were responsible for the region’s modern development, implying that the idea of Western nation-building had done more harm than good.

Those comments were met with pushback from Pence, who suggested the remarks undermined the legacy of U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He took particular exception to the speech being delivered in Saudi Arabia, referencing the country’s connection to the September 11 hijackers.

Despite distancing himself from Trump in multiple interviews, Pence claimed earlier this year that he intended to serve as a “constructive force” within the conservative movement during the president’s second term. While positioning himself as a Republican voice willing to challenge Trump, it remains unclear whether such a stance has gained meaningful traction among the party’s base.
