Federal immigration agents, backed by the National Guard, executed coordinated raids at two Southern California cannabis farms on Friday, arresting dozens, including undocumented minors, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The operation took place at Glass House Farms in Camarillo and another cannabis facility in Carpinteria, about 35 miles north. The raids began simultaneously around 8:30 a.m.
Aerial footage showed a heavy federal law enforcement presence at the Camarillo farm, where agents detained workers as crowds of protesters gathered nearby.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott reported on X that 10 undocumented minors were found at the Camarillo farm, including eight unaccompanied children.
Scott added that Glass House Farms is under investigation for possible child labor violations linked to the presence of these minors.
Scott also criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), writing on X, “This is Newsom’s California,” implying state-level responsibility.
Newsom responded on social media by condemning the immigration raids, prompting DHS to question why children were working at a marijuana facility in California.
The DHS highlighted that the Biden administration had lost track of roughly 300,000 unaccompanied children, many of whom may have been trafficked or exploited, per the Conservative Brief.
In their statement, DHS said that law enforcement rescued eight unaccompanied migrant children at the Ventura marijuana farm, citing potential child labor law violations and human trafficking concerns.
The DHS added that unaccompanied migrant children should never be forced into labor at marijuana facilities in California.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed the operation via X, noting that federal agents executed a search warrant and had arrested multiple individuals obstructing the enforcement.
Essayli warned that interference with the operation would lead to federal charges, urging protesters to stand down.
Tensions escalated around 12:35 p.m. when law enforcement deployed tear gas and less-lethal rounds to disperse protesters who blocked both northbound and southbound lanes of Laguna Road.
Essayli later posted a video showing a man apparently firing a pistol at federal agents during the clashes.
The FBI announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the shooter, identified only as an unknown subject who fired at officers near Camarillo on July 10 around 2:26 p.m.
On Friday, President Donald Trump issued a statement granting federal immigration agents “total authorization” to defend themselves following the violent protests during the cannabis farm raid.
Trump condemned the protesters who threw rocks and bricks at ICE officers, describing them as “THUGS,” and ordered Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Tom Homan to instruct agents to arrest attackers by any means necessary.
