President Donald Trump has authorized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to use “whatever means necessary” to arrest individuals who attack federal officers during immigration raids.
The announcement follows violent clashes between protestors and federal agents during a Thursday raid at a cannabis farm in Camarillo, California.
The raid led to the detention of 200 migrant workers, including several juveniles, who officials say were illegally employed at the site.
Trump reacted after seeing footage of protestors throwing rocks and bricks at ICE officers as they drove along a roadway during the operation.
On Friday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he had instructed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Tom Homan to issue directives to arrest anyone assaulting law enforcement.
He called for officers to stop their vehicles and apprehend “slimeballs” who assault them with objects, emphasizing they should protect themselves “just like they protect the Public.”
The raid occurred at Glass House Farms, which claims to be the world’s largest cannabis producer and employs hundreds of workers, as the Daily Mail reported.
Protestors arrived at the farm to block the federal operation, leading to the deployment of flash bangs, tear gas, and smoke by agents.
While most protestors fled, a portion remained and threw rocks at federal officers, escalating the confrontation into a violent standoff.
The demonstration continued into the night, lasting past 11 p.m., with federal agents staying on-site throughout the incident.
Footage from the raid showed over 100 individuals clashing with ICE, many forming a human blockade. Several were family members or fellow farmworkers.
The scene turned chaotic, with crowds dispersing across the fields. During the unrest, a Mexican farmworker, Jaime Alanís, fell from a building and died from severe injuries.
Photos showed protestors holding signs as they confronted law enforcement, while National Guard troops also stood present at the farm.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott confirmed that 10 minors were discovered working at the facility, some as young as 14, many unaccompanied.
Scott said the cannabis operation is now under investigation for potential child labor violations and posted a photo of the juveniles detained.
“California, are you ready to partner with us to stop child exploitation?” Scott asked in a message accompanying the image.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) responded by criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement, rather than addressing the labor allegations.
Newsom accused Trump of tear-gassing children and separating families, contrasting that with California’s prosecution of traffickers and exploiters.
Earlier, Newsom suggested that children were fleeing from tear gas because their mothers had just been taken during the raid.
Vice President J.D. Vance defended the enforcement operation, criticizing Democrats for objecting to the application of immigration law at the cannabis farm.
