Senior Trump administration officials have disclosed their dissatisfaction with how the Jeffrey Epstein files investigation was conducted, revealing significant missteps that occurred throughout the process.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a memo through Axios on Sunday night following the July 4 holiday weekend.
The memo announced their investigation concluded with no evidence that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein maintained a “client list” or was murdered, Resist the Mainstream reported earlier this week.
The announcement created immediate shock among the president’s base.
This reaction was particularly strong given Attorney General Pam Bondi’s previous acknowledgment that she was reviewing a “client list” and the distribution of “Phase 1” binders containing Epstein files to conservative social media influencers.
A new exclusive report from the Daily Caller reveals administration officials have expressed frustration about the DOJ’s handling of the investigation.
They believe the department misrepresented the amount of evidence available to dismantle Epstein’s alleged child trafficking operation.
The internal criticism suggests deeper organizational challenges within the Justice Department regarding communication and expectation management.
Officials indicated that the investigation’s conclusion left many questions unanswered for the American public.
“You can arrest all the drug leaders and cartel leaders, but people want closure on this case, and the Attorney General must find a better way to reconcile that,” one official told the Daily Caller regarding public response to Sunday’s announcement.
Senior administration officials also conveyed confusion about whether the Epstein case was actually “closed” following the memo’s release.
One source noted the memo appeared to close the case while acknowledging sealed documents remain in various ongoing cases.
The confusion extended to questions about what materials remain under seal and whether future legal proceedings might reveal additional information.
This uncertainty has contributed to ongoing speculation about the completeness of the investigation.
A third source familiar with the situation revealed that very few people knew about the final memo being published.
Sources suggested that better internal communication might have prevented some of the subsequent backlash.
The MAGA community has struggled with the abrupt ending to the Epstein investigation.
Many have referenced Bondi’s previous comments which appear to contradict the final report’s findings.
Social media platforms have been filled with discussions about the investigation’s conclusion, with many Trump supporters expressing disappointment and calling for further action.
During a February 21 interview on Fox News’ “America Reports,” host John Roberts questioned Bondi about releasing Jeffrey Epstein’s client list.
“One of things that you alluded to, and this is something Donald Trump has talked about, the DOJ may be releasing the list of Jeffrey Epstein’s clients? Will that really happen?” Roberts asked.
“It is sitting on my desk right now to review. That’s been a directive by President Trump, I’m reviewing that. I’m reviewing JFK files, MLK files. That’s all in the process of being reviewed because that was done at the directive of President Trump for all of these agencies,” Bondi responded.
This apparent contradiction has become a source of irritation within the administration. One senior administration official told the Daily Caller that it was known there was never a “client list” or “smoking gun” when Bondi made her Fox News comments.
The disconnect between public statements and internal knowledge has raised questions about communication protocols within the Justice Department.
Administration officials have privately acknowledged that clearer guidance might have prevented the confusion.
The official expressed uncertainty about why Bondi made those statements and suggested the DOJ was generally prone to overpromising.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified during Monday’s press briefing that Bondi was referring to Epstein-related documents in their entirety.
A source familiar with the situation confirmed that Bondi did have Epstein documents on her desk when she made those comments but had not yet reviewed their contents.
The source added that some close to Bondi believe she was inadequately prepared and is unfairly bearing responsibility for poor guidance from lower-level officials.
Leavitt told the Daily Caller that Trump maintains confidence in Bondi and denied any discord within the administration.
“President Trump is proud of Attorney General Bondi’s efforts to execute his Make America Safe Again agenda, restore the integrity of the Department of Justice, and bring justice to victims of crime. The continued fixation on sowing division in President Trump’s Cabinet is baseless and unfounded in reality,” Leavitt stated.
Days after the Fox News interview, the DOJ created another spectacle around the Epstein Files release.
On February 27, various conservative influencers received white binders titled “Epstein Files: Phase 1.”
Recipients included Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok, Jack Posobiec, DC Draino, Mike Cernovich, Chad Prather and Liz Wheeler.
The influencers were photographed exiting the White House with the documents, raising them in the air for onlookers to see.
Significant hype surrounded the binders and anticipation built for potential “Phase 2” or “Phase 3” releases. However, internally, the binders were recognized as a major misstep that shaped perceptions about the investigation’s remainder.
One senior administration official told the Daily Caller they knew there would never be a neat conclusion to the saga as the binders suggested.
Two officials told the outlet that all DOJ actions surrounding the Epstein files after the influencers’ photo opportunity were designed to cover up the mistake of releasing the binders.
Less than two months before the memo’s release, FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino defended their agency’s findings that Epstein killed himself during Fox News appearances.
Their answers fueled public doubt, and some MAGA influencers continue wondering if a “cover-up” is occurring.
