The America First movement is facing its biggest test yet.
One of its biggest supporters just went off the rails.
And Ron DeSantis blew a gasket after Elon Musk made this massive mistake.
DeSantis calls out Musk’s third-party disaster
Elon Musk dropped a political bombshell over the weekend.
The tech mogul announced he’s creating the “America Party” to take on both Republicans and Democrats.
Musk’s been going after President Donald Trump over that massive spending package Congress rammed through earlier this year.
Musk called Trump’s massive spending legislation wasteful and decided to take his frustrations out on the entire Republican Party.
But Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wasn’t having any of it.
During a press conference in Jacksonville on Monday, DeSantis delivered a reality check to Musk that he probably didn’t want to hear.
“I think Washington needs to be overhauled a 100 percent, but I just don’t think a third party is going to do it,” DeSantis said.¹
The governor didn’t mince words about what Musk’s third-party experiment would actually accomplish.
“The problem is, when you do another party, especially if you’re running on some of the issues that he talks about, that would end up if he funds Senate candidates and House candidates and competitive races, that would likely end up meaning the Democrats would win all the competitive Senate and House races,” DeSantis explained.²
DeSantis was clearly frustrated that Musk couldn’t see the obvious problem with his plan.
A third party would just hand Democrats easy wins all across the country by splitting up conservative voters.
DeSantis offers Musk a better path forward
Instead of having a meltdown and creating some doomed third party, DeSantis had a way better idea for how Musk could actually get things done.
The Florida governor urged Musk to focus his massive resources on getting states to ratify a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

“If Elon wanted to weigh in on that, he would have a monumental impact on doing this,” DeSantis said.³
Using Article V of the Constitution, 28 states have already approved measures calling for a balanced budget amendment.
Once 34 states sign on, they can call a constitutional convention to draft the amendment.
Then three-quarters of the states would need to ratify it.
DeSantis pointed out that this approach would actually solve the spending problem that has Musk so upset in the first place.
“We have a problem in the Republican Party with these DC congressmen. They always run saying there’s out-of-control spending and they’re going to spend less, and they never do it,” DeSantis explained.⁴
He also suggested that Musk push for term limits for members of Congress.
“You can do both of those things, but I think if you did that all of a sudden, that moves the needle on both of those issues,” DeSantis said.⁵
The governor understood that the real problem isn’t the Republican Party itself.
It’s that Washington, D.C. swamp that turns good people into corrupt politicians.
The real problem with Congress
DeSantis nailed it when he talked about how Republicans promise one thing back home and do something completely different once they get to Washington, D.C.
“I think there is a lot of frustration with the gap between the rhetoric and their district and the performance once they get into DC,” DeSantis said.⁶
This is exactly what happened with Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.
Musk worked hard to identify wasteful spending that could be cut from the federal budget.
But when it came time to actually implement those cuts, Congress wasn’t interested.
“Elon was doing DOGE and a lot of Congress didn’t want anything to do with actually adopting the DOGE cuts, just like they didn’t want to adopt the Trump executive orders on immigration and all these other things, which I think you have to adopt in law if you want them to have staying power,” DeSantis explained.⁷
DeSantis understood that the problem wasn’t with Trump’s policies or Musk’s recommendations.
The problem was with a Congress that talks tough about spending cuts but never follows through.
“I don’t think electing a few better people is going to change the trajectory,” DeSantis said.⁸
The governor realized that the entire system needs to be restructured with constitutional amendments that would force Congress to be fiscally responsible.
What this means for the America First movement
DeSantis just showed why he’s got the right stuff to lead the America First movement.
Musk wanted to blow up the whole Republican Party over one spending bill.
But DeSantis? He’s thinking about the long game.
The Florida governor understood that handing Democrats easy victories wouldn’t solve the spending problem.
It would only make things worse by putting the party of unlimited government spending back in power.
DeSantis also showed that he’s learned from his own political battles with Trump.
The governor “has previously clashed with Trump but has recently moved past those disagreements,” according to reports.⁹
DeSantis gets it.
Unity matters more than personal grudges in the America First movement.
While other politicians let their egos get in the way, DeSantis is focused on actually solving problems for the country.
The governor’s suggestion that Musk focus on constitutional amendments instead of starting a third party shows the kind of long-term thinking that could actually change Washington, D.C.
A balanced budget amendment would force Congress to live within its means.
Term limits would prevent career politicians from getting too comfortable in the swamp.
These structural changes would have a much bigger impact than electing a few third-party candidates who would probably lose anyway.
DeSantis’s advice to Musk was simple but brilliant: don’t let your frustration with the system blind you to the most effective ways to change it.
That’s what the America First movement needs right now – leaders like DeSantis who don’t get caught up in the anger and actually focus on winning.
