Recent reports indicate that President Donald Trump might have had a point when asserting he was unfairly targeted before the 2016 presidential election.
The now-debunked document, called the “Steele Dossier” used to launch the surveillance on then-candidate Trump, was used in the criminal investigation of former CIA director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey, as Fox News reported.
The dossier was compiled by a former British intelligence officer, Christopher Steele, and was funded by former first lady Hillary Clinton, who was running against Trump for president at the time.
It was also supported by the Democratic National Committee, via the Perkins Coie law firm, a group that the current Trump administration has had some serious questions for.
After He Won
While Comey and Brennan might have done some questionable things in their career, the pair served some penance when they carried out the unenviable job of briefing Trump about the dossier after he was inaugurated the first time.
The pair had to take the document to Trump Tower in New York City in January of 2017 and show him the often outrageous allegations of cooperation between Trump and Russia.
They also had to face the fact that they both knew, when they used the dossier to spy on Trump, that Clinton was whipping up the intelligence community into a frenzy, for the explicit purpose of winning the election.

Brennan denied any wrongdoing during a recent appearance on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House.”
The former CIA head asserted that, while he was at the helm, his agency “stayed true” and didn’t make any attempt to influence the election.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller testified before Congress about the issue and possible interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.
Mueller said that the allegations by Michael Sussman, who was representing the Democratic National Committee at the time, sent to the FBI were patently false.
Outsider’s View
Fox News’ Gregg Jarrett spoke to the allegations that Brennan and Comey “framed” Trump using the dossier saying on Thursday’s edition of Fox and Friends that “I think Americans already knew that.
“You know, I wrote two books on the subject, the Mueller report came out and confirmed what I wrote, that so much was based on a phony document known as the dossier, paid for by Hillary Clinton and Democrats and then commandeered by those two guys John Brennan and James Comey.”
The commentator went on to say that, at the time, those in charge “manipulated the system” and “abused their power.”
According to Jarrett, Comey launched the investigation in violation of FBI regulations, and Brennan took the document, knowing it was “garbage.”
