Surveillance cameras captured the execution-style killing of a high-ranking Ukrainian intelligence officer on the streets of Kyiv in broad daylight Thursday morning.
Colonel Ivan Voronych, a senior security officer with Ukraine’s Security Service, was fatally shot multiple times while crossing a street in the Holosiivskyi district.
The attack occurred at approximately 8 a.m. as the colonel was leaving his apartment building.
Video footage obtained by Ukrainian media outlets shows the armed perpetrator approaching Voronych and firing at close range before fleeing the scene.
The assailant appeared to use a silenced pistol during the attack.
The gunman was recorded sprinting across a parking lot outside Voronych’s residential building moments before carrying out the shooting.
Surveillance footage reveals the attacker fired five rounds at the Ukrainian officer.
Roman Chervinsky, a former Ukrainian intelligence officer, confirmed details of the assassination to The Telegraph.
“With five shots at close range while leaving the apartment today at 8 a.m., the enemy killer did his dirty work,” Chervinsky stated.
Chervinsky emphasized Voronych’s extensive service record, noting the colonel had been “fighting the enemy since 2014.”
The fallen officer had dedicated over a decade to operations against Russian forces and intelligence activities.
Voronych specialized in leading high-level special operations, counter-terrorism activities and security missions for Ukraine’s intelligence apparatus.
His role placed him at the center of Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russian forces.
Emergency responders found the colonel with multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.
Medical personnel pronounced Voronych dead upon arrival, unable to provide life-saving treatment.
A fellow Ukrainian intelligence officer accused Russia of orchestrating the targeted killing.
The accusation reflects ongoing tensions between the two nations’ intelligence services during the current conflict.
Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed the incident in an official statement.
“A criminal investigation has been opened into the murder of an SSU employee in Kyiv’s Holosivskyi district,” a spokesperson told Ukrainska Pravada.
The security service pledged comprehensive action in response to the assassination.
“The Security Service and the National Police are taking comprehensive measures to establish all the circumstances of the crime and bring those responsible to justice,” the spokesperson continued.
The killing follows a pattern of targeted eliminations between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Both nations have conducted assassination operations since the conflict began in February 2022.
The most recent comparable incident occurred three months prior when Russian military general Yaroslav Maskalik died in Moscow, per the New York Post.
Maskalik, deputy head of the Russian Armed Forces’ main operations directorate, was killed in a car bombing outside his residence.
A remotely detonated explosive device planted in a parked vehicle killed the Russian general in April.
The attack took place one day after the Kremlin launched deadly strikes against Ukrainian targets.
Law enforcement sources confirmed the Moscow bombing was a targeted operation.
The device was strategically placed near Maskalik’s home and activated as he walked past the vehicle.
