A former South Carolina elementary school teacher is behind bars after authorities say she had a disturbing, years-long sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy.
Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, turned herself in to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office on the morning of July 10. She’s now facing multiple charges, including three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
According to investigators, the former teacher began grooming the boy in 2021, when he was just entering his teenage years. The relationship allegedly escalated over time, with Callaham frequently pulling the student out of school, driving him to practices, and taking part in after-school activities as a supervisor.
Authorities say these repeated interactions allowed the abuse to continue in secret for at least two years. The now-18-year-old victim came forward earlier this year, after taking time to process the trauma.
The Greenville Police Department also got involved, revealing that some of the alleged abuse occurred in their jurisdiction. They’ve filed additional charges—eight counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and four counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.
Search warrants reportedly uncovered evidence that supports the claims, and officials say the victim’s family has been cooperating with the investigation. A parallel probe is also underway in Clemson.
Callaham has since resigned from her teaching role. The local school district confirmed they are aware of the charges. She will be transferred to Greenville County Jail to face the additional charges.
