President Donald Trump‘s recently signed “One Big, Beautiful Bill” has faced significant backlash, resulting in a decline in his approval rating.
Just days after its enactment, polling data reveals that a significant majority of Americans are firmly opposed to the sweeping measure.
Trump’s Approval Rating

According to polling conducted by YouGov/Economist from July 4 to July 7, which surveyed 1,528 adults, 53 percent of respondents disapprove of the newly established legislation, while only 35 percent express support.
The opposition has climbed by 10 percentage points since April, when the measure was initially introduced. For context, following Trump’s first-term budget’s passage in 2017, opposition stood at a more palatable 41 percent against a 28 percent approval rating.
“This bill is emblematic of how disconnected the administration is from the reality of ordinary Americans’ lives,” says political analyst Jenna Torres, reflecting on the profound discontent circulating within the electorate. “A majority of people are worried about how this will impact their families and communities.”
What’s in Trump’s Bill?

The implications of the bill — formally known as the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA)” — are stirring anxiety across demographics. Trump himself, speaking on Air Force One after the bill’s signing, presented it as a triumph, yet many Americans have responded with skepticism.
The legislation entails controversial measures, including cuts to Medicaid and increased funding for immigration enforcement.
Compelling statistics paint a grim picture of public sentiment toward the bill. A poll conducted by Quinnipiac from June 22-24 indicates that 55 percent of Americans oppose the legislation, while a Fox News survey from June 13-16 shows an even higher opposition rate of 59 percent. Meanwhile, a KFF poll from June 4-8 indicates that disapproval has swelled to a staggering 64 percent.
The Public’s Hesitation

YouGov’s polling further dissects the public’s hesitation, revealing that 52 percent of Americans — including a staggering 80 percent of Democrats and 22 percent of Republicans — believe the federal budget deficit will worsen due to this new legislation. Only 11 percent expect the deficit to remain unchanged, while 19 percent are optimistic and predict a decrease.
When respondents were asked about the bill’s impact on everyday Americans, a striking 52 percent anticipated that average citizens would be hurt “a lot” or “a little.” Only 28 percent perceived the legislation as beneficial, with a mere 9 percent believing it would yield little to no impact.
The concern extends to personal domains, with 42 percent of respondents believing their families would be negatively affected, while 24 percent expect positive outcomes.
The Cost

The Congressional Budget Office has projected the bill could inflate federal deficits by an eye-watering $3.4 trillion over the next decade, a claim that has been met with resistance from Republicans and the White House.
One of the most contentious aspects of the legislation looms over Medicaid. Approximately 67 percent of Americans foresee cuts to Medicaid funding, while only 6 percent anticipate an increase. According to nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates, the bill is expected to slash roughly $1.1 trillion in healthcare spending and lead to the loss of health insurance for 11.8 million individuals over the next 10 years.
