Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass sparked controversy this week after throwing a political tantrum over a federal immigration enforcement operation in MacArthur Park. The mayor condemned the lawful actions of ICE agents, continuing the Democratic Party’s now-routine defense of illegal immigrants while vilifying the officers enforcing federal law. But like it or not, no amount of posturing is going to stop federal agents from doing their jobs.
Then, in came Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who decided to double down on the fantasy. In an attempt to prop up Bass’s narrative, Swalwell tweeted:
“MacArthur Park is not a war zone. It is a playground, a picnic spot, a community spot. But you wouldn’t know that looking at it now. Why send armed agents to terrorize a community?”
Apparently, Swalwell hasn’t set foot in MacArthur Park in years — or perhaps ever. Because anyone with a working pair of eyes, or who’s even driven past it recently, knows the area is plagued by homelessness, drug activity, and crime. It didn’t take long for the internet to serve up a reality check. Swalwell’s tweet was ratioed by fed-up Californians who rightly mocked him for pretending the park is some kind of idyllic family gathering spot.

Many users pointed out the obvious: no one picnics there, no one feels safe there, and if Swalwell really believed his own words, he’d post a video of himself having lunch with his kids in MacArthur Park — but he won’t, because he knows better.
Others reminded him of his infamous entanglement with Chinese spy Fang Fang. It’s become something of a shorthand now — a symbol of Swalwell’s detachment from both reality and accountability.
Can you send me an audio clip of you saying that so I can superimpose it on video of all the druggies and violence?

To top it off, his own district isn’t even in L.A. It’s hundreds of miles north, near San Francisco. He has no jurisdiction, no clue, and no credibility on what’s happening in MacArthur Park.
Let’s go back to what NBC reported in 2024. Their own reporter didn’t even enter the park until hours after the operation — and even then, only approached a few blocks away to ensure “safety.” Earlier in the day, their footage showed a park overrun with vagrancy and open-air drug use. Local business owners, including the longtime proprietor of the iconic Langer’s Deli, were considering shutting down due to the deteriorating conditions.
LOL…I guess you could consider the homeless encampments as a “perpetual picnic spot” https://t.co/F4OqOdHz7m

So when Swalwell paints the park as a peaceful “community space,” he’s not describing reality — he’s describing a narrative. One meant to villainize law enforcement, excuse lawlessness, and distract from the very real consequences of sanctuary policies and unchecked illegal immigration.
