The Christ Medicus Foundation is sharpening its call for a federal investigation into the abortion drug mifepristone, warning the drug poses “unthinkable” dangers to women’s health.
In a July 9 statement obtained by CatholicVote, the pro-life health care organization said the FDA’s regulatory approach fails to protect women and requires urgent reform.
“[T]he current federal regulatory approach to mifepristone needs to be overhauled,” Executive Director of Christ Medicus Foundation Louis Brown said. “[W]omen are not being given the opportunity for informed consent to mifepristone, alternatives are not being disclosed, conflicts of interest persist, and patient safety is at serious risk.”
The statement expands on a joint letter sent earlier this week to FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, co-signed by CatholicVote, Christ Medicus, and more than 100 pro-life groups.
The letter urges a formal investigation into the drug, which now accounts for more than 60% of abortions in the US. Pro-life researchers have long accused the FDA of ignoring mounting evidence of the drug’s dangers after its rushed approval in 2002.
Brown cited two new reports backing the group’s concerns: a policy paper from the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) and a landmark study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC).
The EPPC study, released in April, analyzed 865,727 chemical abortions between 2017 and 2023. It found that nearly 11% of women suffered serious or life-threatening complications — including hemorrhage, infection, and sepsis — within 45 days of an abortion. The rate is more than 20 times higher than what the FDA-approved label indicates.
Brown emphasized that even apart from the moral issue of abortion, the drug’s health risks alone demand immediate regulatory intervention.
“[I]t is unthinkable that a product as dangerous to women as mifepristone is so broadly available in the marketplace with virtually no regulation or safety protocols,” Brown said. “Overhauling the federal regulatory approach to mifepristone should be at the top of the list of this Presidential Administration’s efforts to Make America Healthy Again.”
The renewed pressure comes as CatholicVote and other pro-life organizations continue urging the Trump administration to revisit the dangerous drug’s approval.
