Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins denounced pro-abortion activists for allegedly celebrating the deaths of over 100 people in catastrophic central Texas floods, calling their actions “sickening” and a reflection of “evil” ideology. The comments follow reports of social media posts by some activists that reportedly mocked the tragedy as “deserved” due to Texas’ pro-life laws.
“There’s no way to sugarcoat this: The floods that have happened in central Texas are some of the worst I’ve ever seen,” Hawkins said. “Tragically, over 100 people have died, and countless more have been affected.” She highlighted the loss at Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp along the Guadalupe River, where 27 campers and counselors perished, with five campers and one counselor still unaccounted for.
Hawkins pointed to a LifeNews.com report stating, “Evil liberals are saying pro-life Texas deserves the floods that have killed little children. Pray for these terrible people.” She added, “Having four children of my own, these comments sicken, sadden, and enrage me, all at the same time.”

The floods, which ravaged areas like Austin and San Marcos last week, have left communities reeling. Local authorities report extensive damage to infrastructure, including pro-life Pregnancy Resource Centers that provide diapers, formula, and support to pregnant women and families. Hawkins announced that Students for Life’s Standing With You Initiative is raising funds to aid these centers, which she described as “the last line of hope” for many affected by the disaster.
“While the prayers and support of pro-lifers across the nation are going out to all those who have been affected, the Abortion Lobby decided to take to social media to celebrate,” Hawkins said. She urged supporters to donate to help rebuild damaged centers, citing the organization’s success in raising over $42,426 for Pregnancy Resource Centers after Hurricanes Helene and Milton struck the Southeast last year.
The authenticity of the social media posts could not be independently verified, and no individuals or groups were named in Hawkins’ remarks. Critics argue her statements risk escalating tensions without substantiated evidence, while supporters say they expose a disturbing trend in online rhetoric.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, speaking Tuesday, focused on recovery efforts, saying, “Texans are resilient, and we will rebuild together.” He made no reference to the controversy.
Students for Life plans to deliver aid, including diapers and formula, to affected Pregnancy Resource Centers as soon as sufficient funds are raised. Hawkins called on supporters to counteract “the evil” of the alleged comments with “love and support for the victims.”
As of Thursday, no arrests or investigations related to the social media posts have been reported. Recovery efforts continue, with federal aid expected to support the hardest-hit areas.
