QUEENS, NY – A parking dispute in the Ridgewood neighborhood escalated into violence, leaving a community on edge. Residents say the altercation was the culmination of long-standing tensions over scarce parking spaces.
Jada McPherson, 21, recounted her harrowing experience, explaining how a routine search for parking spiraled into chaos. “I couldn’t even tell I was being hit at first,” she said, reflecting on the incident. Cell phone footage captured McPherson enduring multiple blows.
The conflict began when McPherson returned home from work on Monday evening, attempting to park on Putnam Avenue near Onderdonk Avenue. She discovered a garbage can deliberately placed to block the spot. “I circled the block several times,” McPherson said. “I came back after 30 minutes, and the can was still there.”
An argument ensued with a man and two women, identified by police as Andreea Dumitru and Sabrina Starman. Tensions quickly flared, resulting in a physical confrontation. McPherson noted, “It was three against one, and I’m barely 130 pounds.”
Witnesses described a scene that erupted into chaos. “I heard voices, looked out, and saw arms flying,” a neighbor recalled. The neighborhood has long been plagued by disputes over parking, with residents frequently seen using objects to reserve spaces.
Authorities arrested Dumitru and Starman at the scene, charging them with assault. McPherson received medical attention for her injuries, while the incident left the community reflecting on the pressures of urban living.
Despite the ordeal, McPherson expressed a desire to move forward. “It gives you a different perspective on life,” she said. “Sometimes you just have to let things be.”
