Former CIA Director John Brennan claimed Wednesday that he is the target of politically motivated retaliation, accusing President Donald Trump of “weaponizing” the federal government in an authoritarian fashion.
Brennan made the remarks on MSNBC’s Deadline while addressing reports that he is under FBI investigation for allegedly making false statements to Congress related to the Steele dossier and the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment.
“It’s so sad and tragic,” Brennan said. “This is the authoritarian playbook. We’ve seen this play out so many times.”
Brennan compared the situation in the U.S. to authoritarian regimes abroad, referencing leaders such as Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and the Chinese Communist Party. He expressed concern that the U.S. is experiencing a “deterioration” in respect for the rule of law and democratic norms.
The investigation into Brennan reportedly stems from questions about his role in incorporating the now-discredited Steele dossier into the official intelligence narrative and subsequent testimony to Congress. Recently declassified documents suggest that Brennan may have overridden internal warnings about the credibility of the dossier, and critics allege that he misled lawmakers.
Brennan, however, described the probe as a broader effort by Trump to undermine the intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
“If a President of the United States is willing to weaponize intelligence and Justice… we really are in deep, deep trouble,” Brennan said. “This whole thing about the CIA note and this possible referral of me and criminal investigation, I think, is just symptomatic of a much broader disease.”
The former CIA director’s comments come amid increasing scrutiny over the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation and a renewed push to investigate former intelligence officials involved in its development. The White House has not publicly commented on the reported FBI investigation into Brennan.
Brennan warned that these actions represent what he called an “authoritarian march” and a corrosive threat to American democratic institutions.
