The Trump administration on Wednesday sued California over its policy of permitting transgender students to participate in women’s sports, alleging discrimination under Title IX, Reuters reported.
The move follows Trump’s earlier issuance of an executive order to protect women’s sports and a Supreme Court decision that upheld Tennessee’s ban on transgender treatments for minors. The top court has yet to rule on statewide transgender sports bans.
“This Department of Justice will continue its fight to protect equal opportunities for women and girls in sports,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said.
California is one of 21 states that permit transgender students to participate in women’s sports. The other 29 have either enacted a law or state regulation to bar their participation, though several such law are currently subject to judicial stays, according to the pro-LGBT Movement Advancement Project.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear cases involving Idaho and West Virginia’s bans in the Fall.
