The United States’ involvement in the war between Ukraine and Russia appears poised to continue, as the years-long conflict shows no signs of winding down.
News broke on July 7 that President Donald Trump plans to send “more weapons” to Ukraine as they are “getting hit very hard,” as Breitbart News reported.
The exact nature of how the country is being hit or how many weapons will be sent to the Eastern European nation has yet to be divulged by the White House, but the fact that the president is sending more weapons has prompted questions in the wake of recent hesitation about arms shipments.
The latest announcement came during a dinner between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when the president was asked directly about his support.
Trump weighs in
The president made his comment about the need for weapons after the administration announced just weeks ago that there would be a pause on shipping certain weapons to the Russian border nation after years of extensive support.
During the question-and-answer session a reporter asked, “Mr. President, are you planning to send more weapons to Ukraine?”
“We’re going to send some more weapons,” Trump said in response. “We have to; they have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now.
He went on, They’re getting hit very hard, we’re going to have to send more weapons — defensive weapons, primarily. But, they’re getting hit very, very hard.”
Trump previously encouraged Ukraine and Russia to pursue negotiations designed to produce ceasefire in the ongoing war, with Trump announcing that he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the topic just days ago.
Volatile relationship
In February of this year, the Trump administration announced concern that the United States had “little to show” for all the aid sent to assist Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the time and discussed the war and ways to end the conflict, something Trump has long said he wants to facilitate.
“This War MUST and WILL END SOON — Too much Death and Destruction,” Trump said in a social media post.
The message added, “The U.S. has spent BILLIONS of Dollars Globally, with little to show. WHEN AMERICA IS STRONG, THE WORLD IS AT PEACE.”
Trump said in a Fox News interview at the time that he wanted “the equivalent of like $500 billion worth of rare earth” from Ukraine in a strategic minerals deal due to the support America has shown since the start of the conflict.
