President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that his administration will provide no amnesty for illegal immigrants working in agriculture and service industries, marking a definitive reversal from earlier statements that suggested potential protections for certain migrant workers.
The president’s clarification comes several weeks after he had floated the possibility of providing assurances for specific categories of migrant workers to address concerns from the American farming industry.
Trump’s latest position eliminates any ambiguity about his administration’s immigration stance.
“There’s no amnesty,” Trump stated firmly.
“What we’re doing is we’re getting rid of criminals, but we are doing a work program.”
Agriculture businesses had previously warned the White House about potential economic impacts they could face if they lost access to migrant workers.
These warnings had prompted Trump to initially consider alternatives to deportation for certain categories of workers, per reports and past statements from the president.
Administration officials on Tuesday, however, presented a unified front against providing any form of leniency to immigrant workers currently in the country illegally.
Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins reinforced the president’s position during a press conference Tuesday, stating that mass deportations would continue in a strategic manner.
“There will be no amnesty, the mass deportations continue but in a strategic way,” Rollins declared.
The Agriculture Secretary outlined the administration’s long-term solution to labor shortages in farming and other industries affected by deportations.
“Ultimately, the answer on this is automation, also some reform within the current governing structure,” Rollins explained.
Rollins then suggested that Americans currently receiving government assistance could fill positions left vacant by deported migrants.
She pointed to a specific demographic as a potential labor source.
“And then also, when you think about, there are 34 million able-bodied adults in our Medicaid program,” she said. “There are plenty of workers in America.”
The administration’s current approach contrasts sharply with the last major amnesty program in American history.
The Daily Mail highlighted that in 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which granted legal status to approximately 2.7 million undocumented immigrants.
That legislation fundamentally changed the immigration landscape and established precedent for comprehensive immigration reform.
The Reagan-era amnesty program required immigrants to demonstrate continuous residence in the United States since January 1, 1982, and to pay back taxes and application fees.
The program also included provisions for seasonal agricultural workers who had performed farm labor for at least 90 days during specific time periods.
Trump’s initial suggestion of potential amnesty measures had drawn swift and pointed criticism from his base of supporters.
MAGA-aligned conservatives expressed deep concern that an influx of new citizens could permanently shift the political landscape in key battleground states.
Conservative supporters worried that large states like California might become reliably Democratic territory if significant numbers of immigrants received legal status and voting rights.
Trump’s reversal on amnesty received enthusiastic support from conservative lawmakers and commentators.
Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) expressed his satisfaction with the president’s decision.
“I am a hard no on any amnesty,” Fine wrote on Tuesday. “Deport them all.”
Conservative pundit Charlie Kirk celebrated the administration’s abandonment of amnesty discussions, describing it as a victory over Washington establishment pressure.
“Yesterday, the internal D.C. Amnesty push got smoked out. Already, everybody is saying that amnesty is dead, a total nonstarter, won’t happen. That’s good,” Kirk wrote.
