A trip to the convenience store turned violent when a South Carolina man stabbed another customer in the throat during a fight over who was next in line.
Frank Arthur Lawson, 64, pleaded guilty this week to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, along with possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was sentenced to 17 years in state prison, according to the Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The stabbing happened in June 2023 at a Spinx gas station in Greenville County. Authorities say Lawson and the victim got into a heated argument at the checkout counter over who was first. Things escalated quickly—Lawson pulled out a knife and stabbed the unarmed man in the throat.
Miraculously, the victim survived thanks to the fast response of EMS crews and nearby hospital staff, officials said.
Lawson’s rap sheet in Greenville County stretches back to the 1980s. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to a similar charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. More recently, in 2018, he was convicted of receiving stolen goods.
This latest incident happened at a Spinx near Greer, a small city in upstate South Carolina. The regional chain of gas stations and convenience stores is popular throughout the Carolinas—but no one expects a routine stop for snacks or gas to turn into a life-or-death situation.
Authorities haven’t released more information about the victim or their current condition, but they confirmed the case is now closed following Lawson’s sentencing.
