The Cuban Bishops Conference expressed concern about Cuba’s dire economic situation in a June 15 Jubilee Year message titled “Pilgrims of Hope” distributed to all the nation’s parishes.
Many have expressed surprise at the “strong” or “blunt” tone of the letter, as it complains bitterly about the nation’s never-ending disastrous state. However, the letter states what the entire world has seen clearly for 66 years: Communism produces misery and poverty.

The communique says the state of misery is reaching the point of desperation. For example, it notes that “with despair and without joy, there is no future for any people.” The letter shows that the present state frustrates the “desirable, legitimate and worthy” desires of every human being “to live and work in peace, realize their personal and family dreams, and achieve progress more comprehensively.” It makes special mention of “the poor, the elderly, the homeless, the hungry, those mired in addiction” that inhabit this socialist paradise.
Thus, the bishops issue a call to action, condemning Cuba’s severe social, economic and political conditions. They declare, “Things are not well, we cannot continue like this—we must do something to save Cuba.”
However, their plea, urgent in tone, makes no mention of the root cause of communism. As a result, the disease persists.
Communism’s Legacy of Ruin
For over sixty-six years, Cuba’s communist regime has systematically dismantled the core pillars of Christian civilization. By rejecting the Commandments, the Catholic family and the right to private property, the government has imposed an ideology upon the people that has left Cuba’s society deeply fractured and desolate.
Why America Must Reject Isolationism and Its Dangers
Centralized economic control has reduced Cuba to a state of dependence and despair. Citizens are stuck in poverty, forced to make ends meet through barter or black markets while dealing with food shortages, energy blackouts and soaring inflation. The bishops correctly warn that this unsustainable model has bred disillusionment, apathy and a dangerous breakdown of social bonds.
Such statements show that the bishops understood that the problem is not something passing but a systemic crisis that requires structural reforms to foster economic freedom, a participatory government, and genuine concern for “the least of these” in society.
The Pseudo-Moral Imperative of Reform and Hope
The problem with the bishops’ letter is that it does not propose a path forward or a moral solution. Their vague path is rooted in ill-defined notions of social justice, dignity, and community effort rather than repentance, avoiding sin, and amendment of life. It speaks nothing of abandoning the communist system, which favors all types of immorality.
The bishops call for “dialogue” with all parties, even the communists who are the cause of the crisis and scourge of the country. They make no mention of justice for the crimes of the communists who are responsible for destroying Cuba or the need to return to a society governed by the Gospels. Without these measures, no meaningful change can be achieved.

Invoking the enduring imagery of Christ’s resurrection and the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Charity, the nation’s patroness, the Cuban Bishops’ Conference aimed to inspire its fellow citizens to “not be afraid of embarking on new paths.”
The Path for Cuba Given by Saint Anthony Claret
The path for a Catholic revival was clearly revealed to Saint Anthony Maria Claret in the late nineteenth century.
Saint Anthony is considered the spiritual father of Cuba, where he served as the Archbishop of Santiago. He was a strong opponent of Freemasonry and warned the nation about the little-known emerging sect of communism. For his outspoken opposition to these evils, there were no fewer than fifteen assassination attempts against him. He was privileged to receive remarkable visions of both Our Lord and Our Lady, providing deep insight into humanity’s struggles.
During one particularly pivotal vision on September 3, 1859, Our Lord revealed to Saint Anthony three great evils that would afflict humanity in the future.

- A series of enormous, devastating, and unimaginable wars were to come.
- Four powerful demons would be released upon the earth that would spread pleasure, the love of money, false reasoning and a will that was separated from God.
- The rise of communism would become humanity’s greatest adversary.
Saint Anthony received a divine warning and a solution. To fight these spiritual and worldly battles, devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the rosary was revealed as the ultimate spiritual weapons in humanity’s arsenal.
Notably absent in the Cuban bishops’ communique were references to the Blessed Sacrament or the Most Holy Rosary that Our Lord recommended.
Restoring Hope in a Fragmented Nation
Thus, the message from Cuba’s bishops is incomplete, ambiguous and lacks the moral strength to confront what has consumed Cuba—communism and rampant vice. It fails to recognize the rights of the Catholic Church, respect for private property, parents’ rights to educate their children and freedom for Catholic worship.

How could the Cuban bishops fail to recognize the root of Cuba’s struggles and address them in their communique?
The bishops’ letter overlooks the fact that there can be no true peace unless it is the peace of Christ. It is impossible for the Catholic Church to achieve peace with an atheistic regime that aims to destroy it. Communism is the antithesis of Catholicism, and there can be no dialogue or reconciliation; there can be no peace in Cuba until communism is defeated.
The Cuban bishops should take to heart the Encyclical Divini Redemptoris where Pope Pius IX, in 1846, “…pronounced a solemn condemnation of communism, where he confirmed in the words of the Syllabus directed against ‘that infamous doctrine of so-called Communism which is absolutely contrary to the natural law itself, and if once adopted would utterly destroy the rights, property and possessions of all men, and even society itself.’”
As one reads the Cuban Bishop’s Jubilee Year message, Pilgrims of Hope, it is disheartening to see that it lacks a clear path for Cuban pilgrims to repent and does not offer genuine hope for shedding the yoke of communism. It is just another “feel-good” statement that keeps impoverished Cubans hopeless.
