ABC News is undergoing yet another significant reshuffle of its midday program GMA3, as anchors Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan exited the show on Monday, prompting renewed speculation about the long-term viability of the troubled spinoff of Good Morning America.
The latest shake-up comes three years after GMA3 was thrust into the spotlight by the highly publicized extramarital affair between former co-hosts T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach.
That scandal severely damaged the program’s brand, contributed to a sustained ratings decline, and raised concerns inside Disney-owned ABC News about its alignment with the network’s family-friendly image.
Despite the exits and internal upheaval, ABC is pushing back against reports suggesting the show is on the verge of cancellation. An ABC News spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that GMA3 is not being shuttered, pointing to recent studio updates and production efforts to align the program more closely with the Good Morning America brand under executive producer Simone Swink.
Nevertheless, media reports suggest the outlook remains uncertain. The Status newsletter stated bluntly that ABC News is “all but throwing in the towel” on the program, while TV Insider raised the question outright: “Is GMA3 Going to Be Canceled at ABC?”
For now, ABC is relying on a rotating group of guest hosts including Will Reeve, Lara Spencer, Sam Champion, and others. The show, once averaging 1.6 million daily viewers in 2022, has seen a 13% drop to 1.4 million since the Robach-Holmes scandal. Among the key 25–54 demographic, losses are even sharper—down 24%.
Despite the setbacks, ABC continues to highlight that GMA3 outperforms daytime competitors such as CBS’s The Talk and NBC News Daily, although it consistently trails behind a wide range of Fox News programming in the same timeslot.
The program has undergone multiple iterations since its 2018 launch as GMA Day, including a temporary rebrand during the COVID-19 pandemic as Pandemic: What You Need to Know, before settling on its current abbreviated title. Leadership has been in flux, and the show’s identity remains unstable even as it tries to rebuild.
ABC News chief Almin Karamehmedovic addressed staff following the anchor departures. Pilgrim, who had been with ABC for over a decade, is moving on to host Inside Edition, while Morgan’s next steps remain undisclosed.
