When disaster strikes, Americans look to strong leaders who don’t hesitate to act.
The devastating floods in Texas put that leadership to the test.
And Ron DeSantis stepped up when all hell broke loose in Texas with this heroic move.
Texas faces catastrophic flooding disaster
What happened in the Texas Hill Country wasn’t just another flood story.
Flash floods ripped through summer camps and small towns like a freight train, leaving destruction that’ll take years to fix.
At least 82 people are dead, with dozens more still missing after the Guadalupe River rose rapidly to the height of a two-story building.¹
The hardest hit area was Kerr County, where Camp Mystic, a girls’ summer camp along the Guadalupe River, suffered devastating losses.
Among the victims are at least 40 adults and 28 children, with 18 of the adults and 10 of the children remaining unidentified.²
The death toll continues climbing as rescue crews work around the clock to search for survivors.
A dozen people remain missing from the summer camp alone, while 41 total victims remain unaccounted for across the flood zone.
Just look at what happened to these folks.
Rescuers found two girls hanging on for dear life 30 feet up in a tree near Comfort, Texas.
Another woman somehow survived after the water carried her more than 20 miles downstream before she grabbed onto a tree.
You can’t call this just bad weather anymore – people are dying, and that means leaders better know what they’re doing when it comes to saving lives.
DeSantis answers the call while others talk
So what did DeSantis do when word reached him about the Texas mess?
No committees. No meetings about meetings.
He got on the phone and told the Florida Division of Emergency Management to pack up three swift water rescue teams and get them to Texas through an Emergency Management Assistance Compact.
“Florida will support Texas following the catastrophic flooding in Kerrville and the surrounding areas,” DeSantis said. “At my direction, [Florida Division of Emergency Management] is deploying three swift water rescue teams through an EMAC to assist with response and recovery.”³
And he wasn’t done.
“We’re standing by to lend more help as requested,” he said, which translates to: whatever Texas needs, Florida’s ready to deliver.
That’s how a real governor handles business – you see people in trouble, you help them out, period.
DeSantis has built Florida into a national model for emergency response, and now he’s sharing that expertise with Texas when they need it most.
While debris and fluctuating water levels make it difficult for crews to navigate the disaster zone, the specialized swift water rescue teams from Florida bring critical expertise that could mean the difference between life and death for missing victims.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava jumped in too, writing on X that “Miami-Dade County stands at the ready to send support if needed.”⁴
Here’s what separates the doers from the talkers – Florida officials actually moved resources instead of just posting about how much they care.
This is what America First leadership looks like
Remember Hurricane Ian back in 2022? DeSantis ran that response like a pro, getting folks help fast while other politicians were still figuring out which way the wind was blowing.
Same thing with Hurricane Idalia in 2023 – he had teams ready to roll before the storm even hit land.
Now he’s doing it again for Texas families who need help right now, not next week after some bureaucrat fills out the right paperwork.
President Trump signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County on Sunday morning, providing federal resources to support the recovery effort.⁵
This coordinated response between Trump, DeSantis, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott shows how effective government can be when leaders focus on results instead of political theater.
The contrast couldn’t be clearer between leaders who take action and politicians who just talk about taking action.
DeSantis didn’t wait for focus groups or polling data to tell him what to do – he saw Americans in trouble and immediately deployed Florida’s resources to help.
This is the kind of America First leadership that puts people over politics and gets results when it matters most.
The families of those still missing in Texas don’t need speeches or press conferences – they need rescue teams with the expertise and equipment to bring their loved ones home safely.
DeSantis understood that and acted accordingly.
While other politicians might have limited their response to thoughts and prayers on social media, DeSantis backed up his words with concrete action that could save lives.
This disaster response also shows why having proven conservative leaders in key positions matters so much for the safety and security of Americans everywhere.
When crisis strikes, you need leaders who’ve been tested under pressure and know how to get things done without bureaucratic delays or political calculations.
DeSantis has proven time and again that he’s exactly that kind of leader – someone who acts decisively when American lives are at stake.
