MIAMI, FL – Chaos erupted on I-95 in Miami over the weekend when a man crashed his vehicle and began firing shots, authorities reported. The suspect, identified as Philip Sanders, is currently in the mental health wing of the jail, delaying his court appearance.
The incident unfolded in the northbound express lanes on Saturday night. After crashing his car, Sanders allegedly targeted a motorcyclist and other vehicles with gunfire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, which some attribute to his poor aim.
Witness Robert Troutman described the scene as surreal. After his BMW was involved in the six-car pileup, he approached Sanders’ white Jaguar SUV to offer assistance. Upon seeing Sanders holding a Glock 43, Troutman quickly retreated. “I knew immediately it was a dangerous situation,” he recalled.
As Troutman returned to his car, he heard several gunshots. “I ducked, fearing for my life,” he said. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Sanders aimed at a motorcyclist who had crashed while trying to evade the collision.
Sanders’ behavior was reportedly erratic. Troopers noted his extreme paranoia, repeatedly claiming someone was trying to harm him. Even after being handcuffed and surrounded by officers, Sanders insisted he was under threat, diving for cover behind a vehicle.
Authorities suspect mental health issues played a significant role in the incident. The case highlights ongoing concerns about mental health and public safety.
No casualties were reported, but the event left witnesses shaken. The investigation is ongoing, with Sanders receiving psychiatric evaluation.
