Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers are facing criticism and abuse for simply doing their jobs, but the administration isn’t slowing down yet, working to fulfill President Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportation.
According to recent reports, the liberal leaning population of Los Angeles, California, is now incensed that immigration enforcement activities took place on the 4th of July at a car wash, as the Daily Mail reported.
The raid took place at around 11 a.m. local time, and video footage shows ICE agents sweeping the area of the Santa Palm Car Wash.
The facility manager said ICE agents were in and out within 10 minutes, but he was unsure of how many people were taken by federal officers, as they didn’t speak to management during the event.
What happened?
According to some witness reports, at least three individuals tried to flee the scene when ICE agents arrived.
Those individuals were specifically targeted by the agents, and at least one was tackled in an alley nearby.
One detainee is said to have been in the country for 30 years, and his son, clearly frustrated, was heard asking, “Why? My dad is not a criminal. He was working at a car wash on 4th of July.”
The aggrieved son went on, “My dad came to work today on the Fourth of July. He loves his country. We’ve been here as long as I’ve been around.”
More details emerge
The car wash owner was reportedly in the bathroom at the time of the raid and was angry that he wasn’t warned before it took place.
He spoke to NBC Los Angeles about the incident and said that several people who have worked for him for dozens of years were arrested.
Even the city of West Hollywood was outraged over the federal officials’ attempts to do their jobs by carrying out the holiday raid.
“On a day meant to honor the ideals of liberty, democracy, and freedom from oppression, we instead confront a deeply troubling reminder of federal overreach,” the city said in a statement.
City officials concluded, “Independence Day should be a time for reflection and reverence, not fear and persecution.”
