An 18-year-old California woman who went missing last week has been found dead—and now her ex-boyfriend is behind bars, accused of her murder.
Marissa DiNapoli was last in contact with her family via text around 9:16 p.m. on June 28, telling them she’d be staying with a friend. When they didn’t hear from her the next day, they reported her missing. Days later, on July 2, police discovered a body at Lake Anderson. The next day, it was confirmed to be Marissa.
Investigators say she was last seen leaving a house with her ex-boyfriend, Martin Mendoza, on the morning of June 29. He was immediately identified as a person of interest. On Sunday, authorities arrested him at the California-Mexico border as he attempted to re-enter the U.S. He’s now facing a murder charge.
“While Mendoza’s arrest may bring a measure of relief, it does not ease the heartbreak we all continue to feel,” the Morgan Hill Police Department said. “Marissa was a radiant, compassionate young woman with a future full of promise.”
Marissa’s family released a heartfelt statement, thanking the public for their support. “The loss of our beloved Marissa deeply saddens us, and at this time, our family kindly asks for privacy as we grieve and navigate this difficult journey.”
They also asked that no GoFundMe or donation pages be created in her name, encouraging people to show support through prayers and memories instead.
Tara Guerrero, one of Marissa’s former teachers, said the teen had an unforgettable presence. “She had the brightest smile that would light up every room,” she told NBC Bay Area. “She’s one of those kids that leaves a mark on your heart—and I have a broken heart right now.”
