Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had high praise for Elon Musk but warned that his America Party could result in Democrat gains in Congress.
Over the weekend, the Tesla/SpaceX CEO’s frustration with President Donald J. Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” boiled over after he reignited a feud between the former allies over his disapproval of the sweeping legislation which among other things, ends the Biden-era tax credits for electric vehicles, a blow to Musk’s business interests.
Musk reacted by announcing the founding of a new political party after polling X users, a move that has been slammed by many as being a boon for the deeply unpopular Democrats who could be the biggest beneficiaries.
TODAY, @GovRonDeSantis to @elonmusk:
“I’ve been a big fan of what he’s done, the problem is, another party… would likely mean the Dems would win.
[Get behind] a Balanced Budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Elon would have a monumental impact on that.
And, term limits!” pic.twitter.com/P73lbVQuML— Bryan Griffin (@BryanDGriffin) July 7, 2025
On Monday, the Sunshine State Republican cautioned that the billionaire political interloper’s hissy fit may cost the party competitive House and Senate seats while lauding his work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and suggesting that there’s another way to handle opposition to the proposed cuts.
“I think Elon Musk has been, you know, one of the most innovative entrepreneurs not just in our country’s history, but probably in world history, and I think he’s done a lot. I think that he’s got a lot more left in the tank, obviously, I appreciated his efforts in the 2024 election,” DeSantis began, praising his work with DOGE before warning that his plans would be playing right into the hands of Democrats.
“And so there was a lot that was done that was very, very positive, and so I think I’ve been a big fan of what he’s done,” the governor continued. “The problem is when you do another party, especially if you’re running on some of the issues that he talks about, you know, that would end up if he funds Senate candidates and House candidates in competitive races that would likely end up meaning the Democrats would win all the competitive Senate and House races.”
“And so look, I’m a Republican, you know, I don’t want to see that happen. I think if you want to, you know, get involved and hold accountable, you know we do have a problem in the Republican Party with these D.C. congressmen. They always run saying there’s out of control spending, and they’re gonna spend less, and they never do it,” he said.
“Elon was doing DOGE, and a lot of Congress didn’t want anything to do with actually adopting the DOGE cuts,” DeSantis added. “Just like they haven’t wanted to adopt the Trump executive orders on immigration and all these other things, which I think you have to adopt in law if you want them to have staying power.”
So, I think there is a lot of frustration with the gap between the rhetoric in their district and the performance once they get into D.C. But the way you do that is expose that in a primary and show that there’s another way forward,” he concluded.
DeSantis said that a better alternative to government spending would be a balanced budget amendment and that Musk could have a “monumental impact” on making it happen as well as stating the obvious, that term limits are needed for members of Congress.
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States – The System seems not designed for them,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post reacting to Musk’s America Party. “The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!”
