Two Congressmen’s families are safe after deadly Texas flooding

Two United States Congressmen spoke out to say their families were safe after extensive flooding killed dozens, with the death toll, like the waters, still rising, as The New York Post reported. 

The flooding, which took place near the head of the Guadalupe River in Central Texas, ravaged areas known for camps and summer vacations.

The event, which has led to at least 91 deaths, took out substantial portions of Camp Mystic, where at least 27 campers and counselors died.

Georgia Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) and Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX) both made announcements saying their families were able to escape the area.

Carter took to X, formerly Twitter, saying, “As you may have heard, my granddaughters were at the summer camp in Texas that flooded. They are safe, and I thank you for your well-wishes and prayers during this time,” Carter said.

The lawmaker didn’t specify where his grandchildren were staying at the time of the floods, but he seemed to reference Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas.

The facility is a Christian camp that was host to 750 campers at the time the flooding reached dangerous levels in the middle of the night.

“Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky,” Carter went on. “My granddaughters lost their cousin, Janie, and many other families are grieving loved ones.”

Texas Rep. August Pfluger also posted on X, saying that his two daughters at the camp were able to be safely evacuated and reunited with him and his wife.

“Camille, Vivian and I are now reunited with Caroline and Juliana who were evacuated from Camp Mystic,” the Texan said on Sunday, asking those reading to join them to “pray for miracles.”

Pfluger went on to say, “The last day has brought unimaginable grief to many families and we mourn with them as well as holding out hope for survivors. We want to thank the first responders who have come from far and wide to save lives.”

In his statement on his family, Pfluger thanked a number of agencies working to help rescue those impacted and assist those in the area:

“The TX Division of Emergency Management has been incredible and the White House, DHS, FEMA, DPS and local officials have all been responsive and helpful,” Pfluger said.

The lawmaker also offered a heartfled message for a Camp Mystic co-owner who died in the floods: “Camp Mystic’s Dick Eastland no doubt gave his life attempting to save his campers. For decades he and his wife Tweety poured his life into loving and developing girls and women of character. Thank you Mr. Eastland. We love you and miss you.”
