Who is Bobby Jenks?
Major League Baseball, through its official account, has released a statement remembering Jenks’s MLB career.
It wrote:
Jenks pitched for the White Sox from 2005 until 2010 and for the Red Sox in 2011. In his time in Chicago, Jenks amassed 173 saves, including back-to-back seasons of 40+ saves in 2006 and 2007. Jenks was named an American League All-Star in both of those seasons.
It was in 2005 that Jenks helped the White Sox, in a significant way, win the World Series Championship.
MLB continues:
Jenks was on the mound as the White Sox recorded the final out of the 2005 World Series, which finished off the 4-game sweep of the Houston Astros and secured the franchise’s first World Series championship since 1917.
He is remembered to this day by baseball fans for this reason.
“We have lost an icon…”
White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf has released a statement on Jenks’s passing, writing that “We have lost an iconic member of the White Sox Family.”
He continued:
None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of Game 4 in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago. He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle, and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend and teammate. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.
Ozzie Guillen, Jenks’s former manager, released a statement of his own.
“Everyone remembers the moment when I called for the big fella in the World Series, so the bobblehead of that moment will be a great way to keep that moment alive for White Sox fans,” Guillen said.
He added, “Bobby Jenks is one of my all-time favorite players. I loved that man. This is a very sad day for everyone involved with the White Sox.”
