The narrow majority with which Speaker Mike Johnson has had to operate in recent months is about to get even tighter amid the imminent departure of a high-profile member of Congress.
Last week, Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) announced the finalization of his previously announced resignation from the lower chamber, with his decision set to take effect on July 20, as the New York Post reports.
Plans announced last month
As CBS News noted in June, Green revealed that he had plans to leave Congress once he played his part in passing President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Green, who served as House Homeland Security Committee chair, issued a statement saying, “Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up.”
He went on, “As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.”
It was last year that Green spearheaded an effort to impeach then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for overseeing the Biden administration’s failures regarding the southern border crisis.
Green took his seat in Congress back in 2019, and though he intended to retire at the end of last year after deciding not to seek re-election, a plea from Donald Trump convinced him to stay on a bit longer.
What comes next?
Green’s Friday statement announced July 20 as his firm departure date and expressed to his constituents that he leaves Congress “with a heavy heart.”
The congressman told his supporters, “The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington.”
Naturally, the speculation of many turned to what Green plans to do next, a topic on which he has remained somewhat vague.
“While I cannot give the details here, I will be doing something specifically designed to help America compete against the CCP, but this time in business.”
Interestingly, some media reports suggested that upon announcing his resignation plans last month, Green was observed pitching business opportunities in Guyana to D.C. lobbyists while remaining “cagey” about his future enterprise.
Majority shrinks as challenges loom
Green’s impending absence leaves Johnson with a razor-thin 219-212 majority in the House, a scenario that presents significant challenges of its own, particularly as Democrats are poised to win seats in special elections soon to be held to replace three recently deceased lawmakers.
With key battles looming in the fall, including a possible government shutdown fight, it remains to be seen how the speaker — fresh from his triumph with the Trump-backed reconciliation bill — will navigate the treacherous waters.
