Despite the pair having served two terms in the White House as president and vice president, the true nature of the relationship between Barack Obama and Joe Biden has always been something of a mystery.
Now, as an upcoming book explains, Obama was aghast at the state of Biden’s campaign to seek re-election in 2024, at one point declaring the enterprise “a mess,” as the Washington Examiner reports.
Upcoming book sheds new light
The impending release is titled “2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America,” and in it, authors Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf offer new insights on the situation leading up to last summer’s tumultuous campaign transition.
According to the book, Obama and Biden shared lunch at the White House less than a year before the general election was set to take place, and the entire experience left Obama feeling “slightly incredulous.”
Once the men finished their meal, Obama lingered on the premises, keen to learn more about the inner workings of Biden’s bid for a second term.
After chatting with members of Biden’s team, many of whom he once employed, Obama laid bare what he and Biden discussed at lunch.
Holding little back in his assessment, Obama told the Biden staffers, “Your campaign is a mess.”
Animosity abounds
Though Obama’s words would later prove prescient amid the eventual collapse of Biden’s campaign and his handoff to the ultimately unsuccessful Kamala Harris, they were not – at the time – appreciated by the staffers to whom they were directed.
According to the authors, some of Biden’s staffers labeled Obama a “prick” who had long “disrespected and mistreated” their boss despite the loyalty he had always embodied.
That impression was only bolstered, the authors noted, when Obama appeared at the Biden White House for an event and referred to the new commander in chief as “Vice President Biden.”
As revelations about Biden’s cognitive state through much of his presidency continue to emerge, history may judge Obama’s take on the 2024 re-election campaign as having been accurate, however.
Not the first time
Obama’s apprehensions about a Biden candidacy were nothing new, given that he reportedly also attempted to talk his former VP out of a 2020 run for the White House, as the Daily Beast has noted.
“You don’t have to do this Joe, you really don’t,” Obama was quoted as telling Biden of his campaign for president.
Punctuating Obama’s feelings about the situation was his alleged admonition, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f**k things up,” a statement also eventually borne out by bitter experience for Democrats everywhere.
