As millions of Americans took time to gleefully celebrate our nation’s independence over the long holiday weekend, one prominent politician used the occasion to lament the state of the country and take a not-so-subtle jab at a former president.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris made her feelings known on X, posting a mournful take on today’s America and adding a cropped photo of herself and her husband that astute observers realized once contained Mr. and Mrs. Joe Biden, as the Daily Mail reports.
“Things are hard”
In an apparent reference to the country’s trajectory under President Donald Trump, Harris wrote, “This Fourth of July, I am taking a moment to reflect. Things are hard right now.”
Compounding her dour outlook, Harris added, “They are probably going to get worse before they get better.”
Attempting to inject at least a little optimism into the message, she continued, “But I love our country — and when you love something, you fight for it. Together, we will continue to fight for the ideals of our nation.”
The post was adorned by an old photo of Harris and her husband watching fireworks last July 4, a seemingly patriotic nod to the nation she professes to admire.
That image, however, originally also contained then-President Joe Biden and then-first lady Jill Biden, both of whom had been mercilessly cropped from the picture, a move that sparked backlash and even mockery.
Symbolic snub?
Link Lauren, a political commentator and former advisor to then-presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., took particular note of the photo editing job.
Lauren mused, “Kamala cropping Joe out is very symbolic,” and perhaps suggestive of the animosity Harris still has toward the Bidens and toward the entire 2024 election cycle that led to her defeat.
Another X user, upon seeing the image, sarcastically declared, “Wow, how classy.”
Yet another netizen scoffed at the sloppy work done to the photo in which part of Joe Biden’s body could still be seen, saying, “At least take his arm out of the shot when you crop it.”
The overall response to the message seemed largely negative, with one user noting, “I scrolled until my fingers were bleeding to try and find a single comment in this thread that supported you. I was unable to do so. Maybe it’s time to retire.”
Cruel summer
The Independence Day photo flap was not the only time in recent weeks when Harris has received significant backlash for takes offered on social media.
Last month, Harris declared herself “appalled” by Trump administration intervention in the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, as Fox News noted, with network contributor Guy Benson stating in response, “The country really dodged a bullet in November,” surely echoing the sentiments of millions.
