El Salvador releases prison footage refuting claims of torture and mistreatment

Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s claims of torture in one of El Salvador’s harshest prisons met with a forceful rebuke, as President Nayib Bukele presents video evidence that seems to contradict the allegations.

The Daily Mail reported that Garcia, an illegal immigrant living in Maryland, alleged severe mistreatment following his deportation under controversial immigration policies, sparking a debate on the veracity of his claims.

In March 2020, Garcia was deported to El Salvador, purportedly due to a perceived administrative error by the Trump administration. He was among many accused of being gang members under policies scrutinized for the harsh deportation of migrants.

A U.S. immigration judge had previously ruled against his deportation, citing potential threats from gang violence, which Garcia stated would endanger his life.

Garcia’s Claims Against CECOT Prison

Upon arrival in his native El Salvador, Garcia was detained at the CECOT facility. He attributes his subsequent suffering to this location, describing instances of physical abuse leading to significant bruises and lumps on his body.

According to Garcia, additional forms of physical and mental distress included sleep deprivation and psychological abuse during his time there.

Furthermore, Garcia’s legal action against the prison system specified conditions like overcrowded cells, rampant violence among inmates, and continuous lighting that disturbed inmates’ sleep. These conditions were emphasized in supporting his narrative of living under duress in the notorious penitentiary.

Garcia also claimed a significant and alarming loss of weight. He reported losing over 30 pounds within a mere two weeks—a statistic that he used to underscore the severity of the neglect and abuse he allegedly suffered during his detention.

Responding to Garcia’s lawsuit and public claims, President Nayib Bukele disclosed a set of videos that painted a starkly different picture of Garcia’s existence in prison.

Aiming to refute Garcia’s statements, the footage illustrated Garcia as calm, collected, and well-integrated within the prisoner community.

Activities documented in the video depicted Garcia partaking in everyday activities, such as playing soccer and gardening, which Bukele included to challenge the depiction of abuse. Additionally, the material showed camaraderie and a sense of normalcy that was inconsistent with Garcia’s allegations.

Garcia’s demeanor appeared especially striking in footage from the Centro Industrial prison. Here, he was portrayed smiling and engaged, at odds with the image of a victim enduring trauma. Bukele’s release of this footage serves as a significant piece of evidence in dismissing the extent of Garcia’s claims.

The Wider Context of Garcia’s Deportation

The situation is further complicated by Garcia’s history, which includes being implicated by the Trump administration as an affiliate of the MS-13 gang due to certain tattoos.
