CBS News reported that several suspects were taken into custody late last week after a Texas police officer was shot outside of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility.
That development brought condemnation from the White House, which declared a “zero tolerance” policy for attacks on law enforcement.Â
Eight suspects taken into custody following shooting
According to CBS News, officers with the Alvarado Police Department responded to a call of a suspicious person at around 11:00 p.m. on Friday evening outside of the ICE Prairieland Detention Facility.
When one of the officers attempted to engage the suspect, an unknown number of individuals opened fire, with one officer being hit in the neck.
That officer was subsequently transported via helicopter to a Fort Worth hospital for medical treatment before being released.
An unnamed federal law enforcement source told CBS News that eight people were taken into custody, with some appearing to be clad in body armor.
“Chaos” breaks out near Portland ICE facility
The New York Post noted how the Alvarado shooting took place on the same day that a riot broke out in front of an ICE facility in Portland, Oregon.
The Daily Mail described “chaos” unfolding on Friday evening as law enforcement officers made use of tear gas and rubber bullets to ward off angry crowds.
The unrest began as a protest against President Donald Trump’s signing of the “big beautiful bill,” a piece of legislation which includes additional funding for ICE.
That fact has been met with condemnation from Democrats like New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who declared in a social media post that “people are going to die.”
DOJ “will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible”
Both the Texas shooting and the riot in Portland were taken note of in a social media post put up by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the [US Attorney offices] and our law enforcement partners,”
