A heated road-rage encounter in Arizona took a deadly turn when a man was fatally shot in front of his two young children — and now the alleged gunman is facing first-degree murder charges.
According to police, the confrontation happened just after noon on Tuesday, July 1, at a Tempe intersection. Dustin Jackson, 46, was behind the wheel of a GMC Sierra with his 6-year-old daughter when he reportedly clashed with 29-year-old Steven Bevan, who was driving a Dodge Challenger carrying his 8- and 9-year-old sons.
Authorities say the dispute began at a red light on Warner Road, where Jackson honked at Bevan for not moving when the light turned green. A short time later, police say Bevan swerved in front of Jackson’s truck, came to a sudden stop, and then got out of his car, shouting and approaching Jackson’s vehicle.
That’s when Jackson allegedly opened his door and fired a gunshot that struck Bevan in the chest. Bevan, who was unarmed and had no weapons in his vehicle, was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.
The deadly incident was partially caught on camera — by Bevan’s own son. According to court documents, one of the boys recorded his dad as he stepped out of the car and put his hand on Jackson’s truck door. After the fatal shot, the video reportedly goes black, with screams of “Call 911” and “Who shot my dad?” echoing in the background.
Jackson, a former Marine who stands 6’8″ and weighs 300 pounds, told police he feared for his and his daughter’s life. Investigators later found cocaine in his glovebox.
Bevan was 5’7″ and approximately 190 pounds, according to police.
Jackson has been booked into jail with a $1 million bond and is facing charges including first-degree murder and drive-by shooting.
