Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), the Democrat Congresswoman from New York who is usually in the news for her idiocy and drama, is again the subject of public interest in regards to an issue buzzing around her since February – the Trump administration’s alleged investigation into her attempts to shield the illegal aliens in the country from deportation.
It was around mid-February this year that Newsweek reported on AOC likely being the subject of a federal investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ). The news came shortly after AOC hosted a live webinar wherein she offered helpful advice to illegal aliens in her congressional district to help them avoid deportation, specifically tips on what to do if they come into contact with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Trump’s border czar Tom Homan told Fox News shortly after the webinar that in his opinion, impediment was impediment and also added, “Is she crossing the line, I’m working with the DOJ to find out. Maybe AOC is going to be in trouble now.”
Homan’s words were taken as a suggestion that a federal investigation had been launched into AOC’s effort to help the illegal aliens. The story dropped out of news cycles soon, like many others do in a few days or over the weekend. Then the issue resurfaced in early June when AOC told Fox News that the DOJ is not responding to her inquiries about whether or not she is under investigation.
Now, a month later, the suspected federal probe into AOC has bounced back in the news with another interview of Homan wherein he seemingly confirmed such an investigation. On Monday, Homan was interviewed by popular conservative podcaster Benny Johnson. Johnson asked Homan about the reported case of AOC having helped one of her staffers, an illegal alien, flee the country. Homan replied that he knows it’s a matter “being looked at” and then stopped himself from telling further by saying that he can’t comment on an open investigation.
Podcasters and social media influencers on the left criticized Homan’s comments with one commentator on The Young Turks suggesting that Homan and others on the right are showing their desperation to take down AOC politically and stop her from running for the presidency. He called it a “tired and bored” attempt at “fascism.”
Homan’s interview with Jonson does seem to have confirmed that AOC is under an investigation though the details won’t be revealed to the public or to AOC herself. Sharing with AOC this credit for helping illegal aliens would be controversial leftist network CNN. The channel recently launched an iPhone app called ICEBlock that would alert users to the presence of ICE agents in their area.
On Tuesday (July 1), Trump’s ICE chief Kristi Noem told reporters that her agency is working with the DOJ on prosecuting CNN for helping the illegal aliens flee law enforcement. USA Today (July 3) cited Noem as:
“We’re working with the Department of Justice to see if we can prosecute them for that because what they’re doing is actively encouraging people to avoid law enforcement, operations.”
Conservatives on social media have slammed Joshua Aaron, the creator of ICEBlock, and called for his arrest.
