A Jewish advocacy group criticized Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for sharing a video they called “sick” that mocked Hanukkah and featured people pretending to be Jewish.
Last year, Mamdani, a leading candidate for mayor, posted a video on his X account from the Geeta Brothers Duet Group. It showed two men wearing wigs, dancing behind a menorah, playing with dreidels, and celebrating with Punjabi-style music.
“Zohran Mamdani posts Indian men cosplaying Jews, spinning dreidels and lighting the menorah,” Stop Antisemitism, a pro-Jewish group, wrote on X on Saturday, sharing the controversial video.

“Our holidays and traditions are sacred and not for your comedic pleasure _ZohranKMamdani — this is sick.”
Mamdani, 33, shared the humorous song “Hey Hannukah” during last year’s Hanukkah celebration.
“Happy 3rd night of Hanukkah from Astoria and Long Island City,” the Queens lawmaker wrote on X at the time.
The video comes from a 2015 parody album called “Punjabi Christmas Album Hits” by the Geeta Brothers, a side project of Sikh-Canadian comedian Jus Reign.
Mamdani also shared a similar video from the same comedy group on Christmas Eve 2024.
“Wishing you all a very merry Christmas from Astoria and Long Island City,” the self-described “nepo-baby” wrote, posting a video for the song “Jingle Bells,” where the performers wore similar wigs.
This insensitive post isn’t the only reason Jewish New Yorkers are upset about Mamdani’s growing popularity.
Some New York City voters were shocked to receive text messages supporting Mamdani that mentioned the tragic October 7th attack in Israel.
“My friend Idan was murdered on October 7 at the Re’im music festival. The war is personal to me, as it is to many in our community,” one text shared with The Post said.
“The war is personal to me, as it is to many others in our community. Idan believed in peace, just like Zohran does,” the text continued. It’s unclear who sent these messages.
Mamdani, a state assemblyman, has also faced criticism for not supporting Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.
Earlier this week, the Bronx Science graduate, who was born in Uganda to Indian parents, upset Black New Yorkers when it was revealed that he claimed to be African American on his Columbia University application.
