A tragic mass shooting shattered the early morning hours of July 5 in downtown Indianapolis, killing two teenage boys and injuring five others — all just after the city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration.
According to police, officers were responding to a disturbance around 1:30 a.m. near Illinois and Washington Street when they heard gunfire erupt nearby. As they approached the scene, they discovered several young people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Two victims, a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy, lost their lives — one at the scene, the other after being rushed to the hospital. The other injured victims range in age from 15 to 21, authorities said during a press conference later that day.
Deputy Chief Tanya Terry confirmed multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, though it remains unclear if any were used in the shooting. Seven people have been detained for questioning, but no suspects have been named and the victims have not yet been publicly identified.
“This should shake every single one of us,” said Police Chief Christopher Bailey. “We cannot grow numb to this kind of violence. Too many lives are being lost, too many families grieving, and far too many kids growing up surrounded by trauma.”
Mayor Joe Hogsett echoed the outrage, calling the shooting “unacceptable” and pledging to begin enforcing curfews for minors in the downtown area. “Today, two families are facing the worst pain imaginable,” he said. “No parent should ever get that call.”
The mass shooting took place just blocks from the site of the city’s annual Fourth Fest, which had drawn huge crowds for live music and a 20-minute fireworks display earlier in the night. It also comes on the heels of a violent holiday weekend in Indianapolis — the second in a row — with last weekend’s shootings leaving seven dead and nine injured.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
