A Michigan community is reeling after a tragic hit-and-run at a local festival left a 3-year-old boy dead and his mother and twin sister critically injured.
Police say 55-year-old Tammy Sandoval was behind the wheel when she allegedly struck the young family during the Livonia Spree festival on Sunday, June 29, and then drove off without stopping. The festival was being held to celebrate the city’s 75th birthday.
According to the Livonia Police Department, Tia Robinson, 28, and her twin children were crossing at Lyndon Street and Merriman Road around 10:45 p.m. when they were hit by a vehicle. Traffic signals at the time were flashing red and yellow due to the late hour, and witnesses told police the driver sped away without checking on the victims.
Bystanders quickly rushed in to help, pulling the children out of the road.
Tragically, 3-year-old Khalil Robinson later died from his injuries. His mother and twin sister were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
“All they wanted to do was go and have fun at the carnival and the fireworks,” said Regina Robinson, the children’s grandmother, in an interview with Detroit’s Fox 2. “Why would anyone keep going without stopping to help?”
The boy’s grandfather, Michael Robinson, called Khalil a “special little child” who was full of love—especially for his twin sister. “If I gave him a piece of candy, he would take one to give to his sister,” he said. “He was very loving.”
Police say Sandoval was driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash. She now faces multiple felony charges, including:
- One count of operating a vehicle while license suspended, revoked, or denied causing death
- Two counts of the same charge causing serious injury
- One count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death
- Two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury
Prosecutors allege Sandoval had just left the fireworks show herself when the collision occurred. Her defense attorney, however, claims she didn’t realize she had hit anyone.
Sandoval appeared in court on Thursday and remained silent as the charges were read. She is being held on a $600,000 bond and is due back in court on July 10.
