A number of black New York City residents are upset that Democrat mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, a Southeast Asian communist, identified as African American when applying to college.
“As he runs for mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani has made his identity as a Muslim immigrant of South Asian descent a key part of his appeal,” The New York Times reported.
“But as a high school senior in 2009, Mr. Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, claimed another label when he applied to Columbia University. Asked to identify his race, he checked a box that he was ‘Asian’ but also ‘Black or African American,’” the reporting continues.
Zorhan Mamdami didnt just say he was African American, cause he was from Uganda…That little shit said he was “black.” All arguments go out the window. So to quote “another” DEI Hire on the Supreme Court. “Full Stop.” pic.twitter.com/Pd4G1TG34b

Mamdani, who’s of Southeast Asian descent but was born and raised in Uganda, defended himself by telling the Times that he was trying to fully represent his complex identity.
“Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background,” he said.
But critics, including NYC’s black residents, have accused him of purposefully trying to take advantage of Columbia University’s affirmative action policies.
“He’s just trying to get over,” an 86-year-old Harlem resident named Marjorie told the New York Post. “You can look at him and see he’s not [black]. Absolutely not.”
“I don’t like him. I didn’t like him from the first time I heard him. You can look at him and see he’s a trickster,” she added.
“He’s a fraud,” another local resident anonymously told the Post. “He’s a foreigner. He ain’t no African American.”
“He’s a liar, point-blank, period,” a Bronx resident named Joshua said. “We don’t need a lying mayor or a mayor that says he’s black so he can get black people to vote for him. We black. We ain’t stupid.”
“I always knew something was off about him,” Maria R., another Bronx resident, said. “Why are you claiming something that you are not? He could’ve potentially took away an opportunity for someone else. He can look in the mirror and see he’s not black.”
Harlem resident Tiffany Francis, 31, concurred that what Mamdani did was “not fair.”
“I think people should tell the truth,” she told the Post. “No matter the circumstances, just be truthful. Don’t try to persuade or lie to get your way.”
What makes matters worse is what Mamdani said in April when asked by a popular New York City performance artist known as Crackhead Barney about the idea of identifying as black:
A Black woman asked Zohran Mamdani if he identifies as Black or African American and Mamdani replied he would never do that. Turns out he would and did. Circumventing “bourgeois truth” is always justified in the service of socialist revolution. pic.twitter.com/W7K0xdDn5p

“Would you claim the African American status like Elon Musk?” Crackhead Barney asked Mamdani.
“No I would not … I think that that is misleading,” the communist candidate replied.
Contrasting Mamdani’s remarks from April with what he told the Times, critics on social media were quick to blast him as a sleazy liar and trickster.
Look:
You hit nail on the head. TOTAL SCAM ARTIST.

Socialism is a scam, a Ponzi scheme stealing earned money and giving it to the lazy. He’s by definition a liar and a thief.

Lying about who you are to cheat the system ain’t right. Mamdani’s full of tricks and lies. People deserve honest leaders, not scammers.

Everything about this scumbag just screams, do not trust me.
A sleazy saleman pushing communism.
His constant smugness is unbearable.— IronStrike (@IronStrike95619) July 4, 2025
Mamdani is a professional politician and thus will say whatever he thinks will help him at the moment. Politicians have no principles and feel no allegiance to the truth. All that matters is what will get them more money and more votes.
