Elon Musk Reveals Plans to Launch the ‘America Party’

Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed plans on July 4 to possibly launch a new political group called the “America Party.”

He aims to challenge the current two-party system and shift the balance of power in Washington after the 2026 midterm elections.

Musk used his social media platform X to poll his followers on whether they support creating the America Party. By mid-afternoon, over 62% had voted “yes.”

Musk framed this as a move for “independence” from the existing two-party (or “uniparty”) system dominating U.S. politics.

The South African-born billionaire suggested the party would focus strategically on winning a handful of key Senate and House seats.

He mentioned targeting “2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts” to influence legislation decisively. Given the current razor-thin majorities in Congress, those seats could hold the balance of power on contentious bills.

This announcement came amid Musk’s public frustration with the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, per the New York Post.

The bill, pushed through by Republicans, has drawn sharp criticism from Musk, who labeled it “pork-filled” and a “disgusting abomination.”

The bill is projected to add roughly $3.9 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade.

Musk argued that such spending undermines efforts like the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to cut government costs.

“What good is Doge saving $160 billion when this bill increases the debt ceiling by $5 trillion?” Musk questioned on X. He criticized the legislation for making a “mockery” of fiscal responsibility.

Trump and GOP leaders claim Musk’s opposition stems from the bill’s rollbacks on Biden-era green energy tax credits, which would negatively affect Tesla, Musk’s electric vehicle company. Musk countered, calling the bill “utterly insane and destructive,” accusing it of favoring outdated industries over future technology.

Musk has publicly supported Republican lawmakers who opposed the bill due to its fiscal impact, notably Senator Rand Paul and Representative Thomas Massie, both from Kentucky. Musk has expressed intent to back Massie’s 2026 re-election campaign despite Trump and allies targeting Massie for defeat in a Republican primary.

Currently, Republicans hold a slim 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 220-212 majority in the House. Musk’s plan aims to tip this delicate balance by focusing on key districts where a new party could sway legislative outcomes.

With an estimated net worth of $405 billion, Musk’s financial resources far exceed those of typical political players. In the 2024 election cycle, he donated approximately $290 million in support of Trump’s campaign, according to disclosures.

Despite his previous backing of Trump, Musk’s recent comments indicate a break with the former president, criticizing the latter’s legislative agenda and signaling frustration with GOP leadership’s direction.

Musk’s interest in forming a new political party aligns with his long-standing reputation for challenging established institutions and pushing disruptive ideas.

The America Party would represent a significant new force attempting to reshape U.S. politics beyond the entrenched two-party system.

The timing on Independence Day added symbolic weight to Musk’s message, as he called for political “independence” from the existing partisan framework.

The proposal has sparked debate on social media and among political observers about its potential viability and impact.
