BUSHWICK, NY – A Bushwick resident is grappling with fear after witnessing a shocking incident on the Rockaway Beach boardwalk. The unsettling event unfolded shortly after a large brawl erupted on the Brighton Beach boardwalk, both incidents caught on camera and raising significant concerns about beach safety as summer crowds swell.
The chaos began when 24-year-old police officer, Kenny, was filming a TikTok video at Rockaway Beach last Tuesday. What she initially thought were fireworks turned out to be gunshots. “I saw people running,” she recounted, “and then I noticed the silhouette of a gun.” Realizing the danger, she and others fled the scene. According to police, a 40-year-old man was shot in the shoulder, and the shooter remains at large. The experience has left Kenny feeling uneasy and anxious.
“It’s frightening to think that a place as peaceful as the beach now feels tainted,” she said. Just one day before the shooting, law enforcement responded to a massive fight on the Brighton Beach boardwalk. The altercation led to 11 people receiving summonses and six arrests, including two teenagers.
People typically visit the beach to relax and enjoy time with family. In response to these incidents, the NYPD has assured the public that additional security measures are in place at beaches citywide to curb further violence.
“I love the beach,” Kenny shared. “I want to feel safe enough to go back, but I know it will take time.” The NYPD is urging anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to report it as the department ramps up its presence in anticipation of a bustling summer season.
With the summer drawing more visitors to the city’s beaches, safety remains a top priority for both residents and authorities. The recent events have highlighted the need for vigilance and community cooperation to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
