Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate to pass the Big Beautiful Bill, a policy that eliminates Planned Parenthood’s federal Medicaid reimbursements for one year. The Senate vote came down to a razor-thin 50-50 split along party lines, requiring Vance, in his role as Senate President, to make the decisive call. The House then approved the bill Friday, sending it to the president to sign.
Politicians have promised to defund Planned Parenthood for decades, but this is the first time lawmakers have actually accomplished it.
This victory cuts off approximately $500 million in annual taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood and its affiliates for the next 12 months—funding that has helped prop up the abortion giant for decades.

Make no mistake—this one-year cut is a major victory, but it’s not the end. Now is the time for bold leadership. Republicans could have done more, and Pro-Life Christians should demand more, not just stop here. Lawmakers must use this momentum to permanently cut off Planned Parenthood’s access to taxpayer dollars and pass legislation protecting preborn babies from abortion nationally.
Data shows when Planned Parenthood loses funding, abortion rates go down.
Texas set the precedent back in 2011, defunding Planned Parenthood of $64 million in taxpayer support. The result? Abortion rates dropped significantly, while the birth rate remained virtually unchanged, rising only slightly from 14.7 to 14.8 per 1,000 people. This strongly suggests that defunding Planned Parenthood did not lead to a surge in unintended pregnancies, but instead, saved lives.
On the flip side, decades of studies show a clear correlation between increased public funding for Planned Parenthood and a rise in the number of abortions they perform. This isn’t shocking when you consider the nature of government funding: Even when money is earmarked for non-abortion services, it still frees up other resources for Planned Parenthood to expand their abortion operations.
Funding builds their brand, extends their reach, and deepens relationships with vulnerable women. All of this is ultimately aimed at pushing their core business: elective abortion, which kills 402,230 preborn babies every year.
This is a policy win—and a win for every child who will now have a chance at Life, and for every woman who will be empowered to her baby instead of being coerced into abortion. Let’s ask our elected leaders to build on this momentum.
