PACOIMA, CA – A tragic incident unfolded in Pacoima as illegal fireworks sparked a devastating fire, leaving one man dead and another critically injured. The blaze, which erupted late last night, engulfed four homes and displaced multiple families and their pets.
Authorities identified the deceased as a man in his 30s. His body was discovered on the property where the fire is believed to have started. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the blaze affected a total of six living areas across the properties involved.
Firefighters arrived swiftly and battled the flames, which had already consumed multiple structures. By morning, crews remained on scene to ensure that the smoldering remnants did not reignite, posing further danger to the neighborhood.
Residents captured harrowing footage of the event, revealing neighbors frantically attempting to protect their homes as fireworks exploded in the background. The blasts were so intense that drivers on the nearby 210 Freeway reported feeling the shockwaves.
In total, more than 130 firefighters responded to the scene, declaring it a major emergency. They managed to control the inferno within an hour, but not before significant damage was done. Four homes have been red-tagged, deeming them uninhabitable for the foreseeable future.
The American Red Cross and the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team are providing support to affected families, offering mental health assistance and helping them cope with their losses.
A 33-year-old woman remains hospitalized with severe burns covering 30% of her body. Four other individuals, including a 68-year-old woman, suffered smoke inhalation but declined hospital transport. Additionally, several pets were injured, and one dog was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital.
The California Highway Patrol and LA Animal Control were called to assist with the injured animals. The fire also caused a gas leak and downed power lines, prompting intervention from local utility companies.
