Democrats continue to take aim at ICE agents as assaults against officers surge to alarming levels. Rep. Pramila Jayapal refuses to back down from her inflammatory rhetoric even as ICE officials warn such language puts their personnel in danger.
At a glance:
• Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons called on Rep. Pramila Jayapal to apologize after she labeled ICE “a terrorist force”
• Assaults on ICE and federal officers have increased by 690% since President Trump took office
• Jayapal doubled down on her comments, claiming the administration owes Americans an apology instead
• ICE officials are concerned about “de-masking” that could affect agents’ families amid rising violence
• ICE continues operations in Los Angeles despite opposition from Democratic Mayor Karen Bass
ICE Director Demands Apology for “Terrorist Force” Comments
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has publicly challenged Representative Pramila Jayapal over her characterization of Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a “terrorist force.” The Washington Democrat’s inflammatory rhetoric comes as ICE officers face an unprecedented wave of violent attacks across the country.
Lyons expressed serious concern that such characterizations from elected officials contribute to the dangerous environment ICE personnel now operate in. Assaults on ICE and federal officers have skyrocketed by 690% since President Trump returned to office, putting the lives of law enforcement at risk.
Democrat Doubles Down Instead of Apologizing
Rather than walk back her incendiary comments, Jayapal has doubled down on her characterization of federal law enforcement. The progressive “Squad” ally refused to apologize and instead claimed the administration owes Americans an apology for immigration enforcement actions.

“ICE is acting like a terrorist force,” Jayapal stated in her original comments. She further alleged that ICE agents were “kidnapping and disappearing people on the streets of the United States.”
Lyons strongly refuted these allegations, noting that Jayapal has a history of making irresponsible statements about law enforcement. In previous incidents, she blamed conservative rhetoric for violent attacks on ICE facilities rather than condemning the extremists who carried them out.
Rising Threats Against Immigration Officials
ICE officials are increasingly concerned about the safety of their agents and their families. The agency reports growing incidents of “de-masking” attempts that could potentially expose officers’ identities and put their loved ones at risk.
On July 2, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) called U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement a “terrorist force.”

Despite opposition from Democratic leaders like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who recently called for federal immigration authorities to “go home,” ICE continues to carry out its congressionally mandated duties. The agency maintains that political rhetoric should not interfere with the enforcement of immigration laws.
“Now, she labels ICE officers enforcing immigration law set by Congress ‘terrorists,’” Lyons said regarding Jayapal’s comments. His statement highlighted the disconnect between elected officials’ inflammatory language and the reality faced by law enforcement personnel carrying out their duties.
The controversy comes as the Trump administration has significantly reduced border apprehensions, with June numbers showing a dramatic drop and no releases of illegal migrants into the U.S. This enforcement success stands in stark contrast to the dangerous conditions ICE officers now face while performing their duties.
