Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) strongly criticized the passage of President Donald Trump’s key legislative achievement, known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
The congresswoman reacted emotionally, calling the moment “one of the saddest days in history” while speaking to reporters.
Ocasio-Cortez stated that the legislation marked the “largest withdrawal and ending of health care in American history.”
She condemned the bill’s provisions, especially those that introduce work requirements for individuals receiving taxpayer-funded benefits.
The congresswoman further claimed that 17 million people would lose access to health coverage due to the bill’s changes.
She noted that many of those affected are not U.S. citizens, highlighting the removal of benefits from illegal immigrants, per Trending Politics.
She warned that the nation is unprepared for the consequences, saying, “I don’t think we have ever seen or are prepared for how catastrophic this is set to be.”
Ocasio-Cortez characterized the bill’s effects as “devastating.”
She also criticized one of the bill’s most publicized elements — the removal of taxes on tips up to $25,000. According to her, this benefit would only impact a limited number of people who are already exempt from such taxes.
Calling the reform a deception, Ocasio-Cortez said, “They’re giving people crumbs and they’re taking away the whole loaf.” She emphasized her view that the bill represents a major step backward for the country.
A reporter asked her to comment on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ prolonged eight-hour filibuster against the legislation. Despite his efforts, the bill ultimately passed the House.
House Republicans mocked Jeffries, referring to his attempt as “low energy” and ineffective in halting the bill’s progress. Nonetheless, Ocasio-Cortez defended Jeffries’ stand.
She praised his speech, stating it sent “the right message” and urged Democrats to continue fighting. “The best thing that we can do right now is press on,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez encouraged her colleagues to build a new strategy moving forward. She added, “We have to chart a new course and a new path to our future. And we have to make sure that there are consequences.”
The House narrowly passed the “Big, Beautiful Bill” on Thursday afternoon with a vote of 218-214. Only two Republicans — Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania — voted against it.
Trump had pushed for the bill’s passage before July 4, and lawmakers met the deadline.
Trump signed the bill at the White House as part of an Independence Day celebration.
The ceremony included flyovers by B-2 bombers, F-22s, and F-35 fighter jets. Trump described the event as a celebration with congressional Republicans.
Trump was joined by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and South Dakota Sen. John Thune (R).
