A late-night tragedy unfolded on a Texas highway when a 22-year-old woman allegedly drove drunk and slammed into an already-overturned car—killing three people at the scene, including a man who had pulled over to help.
Kearra Thomas was arrested Sunday and is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with one of the deaths. The victims have been identified as Agustin Guillen, 38, Quinn Stegall, 21, and Maximo Ramirez, 49.
According to Round Rock Police, officers and medics responded around 2:24 a.m. on June 29 to the 1100 block of North Interstate 35 after reports of a major collision. Before they even arrived, authorities were told there were “multiple obvious deaths on scene.”
Police said Thomas was driving a blue Ford northbound when she crashed into a silver Honda that was overturned and resting on its roof. One passenger inside the Honda was already dead.
Investigators said the road was well-lit and that Thomas appeared to have plenty of visibility. Officers said they smelled alcohol on both Thomas and her boyfriend, who was in the passenger seat.
Thomas told police the car in front of her came to an “abrupt stop,” forcing her to veer into the left lane—where she hit the overturned Honda head-on.
She allegedly appeared “nonchalant and sedated” during questioning. Thomas said she had been driving back to Temple after dining at a restaurant—though she couldn’t remember the name or location. She admitted to drinking a 200 ml “Big Sipz” cocktail, which has an alcohol content of 16%, and smoking marijuana earlier that night.
When asked how she felt about the crash, Thomas reportedly smiled and replied, “I don’t know. I’ve seen things I’ve never seen before. I’m not really sure how to feel… I’m just thankful to be alive.”
A breathalyzer test showed Thomas had a blood alcohol level of 0.103, above Texas’ legal limit of 0.08. She was arrested on the spot and taken to the Williamson County Jail, where she is being held on a $300,000 bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for August 20.
Authorities have not released details about the original crash that caused the silver Honda to overturn.
One of the victims, Maximo Ramirez, had stopped his car to help the others. His sister, Mari Ramirez, said he was just doing what he always did—putting others first.
“My brother was very simple and had a kind heart,” she told CBS Austin affiliate KEYE. “He was a medical assistant, hence the reason he got out of his car to help someone else. He was always doing good. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone else.”
