There are new travel warnings for U.S. citizens as tensions have escalated in the Middle East following Iranian missile strikes on a U.S. base in Qatar. Flights around the globe experienced significant disruptions, leaving thousands of travelers stranded or diverted as airlines scrambled to adjust to the sudden changes. The U.S. Department of State has issued only two travel advisories since the strikes.
Travel Advisories

Qatar has received a Level 1 advisory warning U.S. citizens to exercise normal precautions while traveling there. “The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) for the region, including Qatar,” the advisory states. “This is due to risks to civil aviation from political and military tensions in the region. The notice advises U.S. operators to review current threat information and to report safety or security incidents. For more information, U.S. citizens should consult the Federal Aviation Administration.” Two days later, a Level 1 advisory was issued for Poland.
Iran’s Actions

The airspace, which was temporarily closed as a direct response to Iran’s military actions, reopened in the early hours of June 24. Reports indicated that Iranian forces had launched missile strikes aimed at the U.S. facility, a retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on its military resources at sites in Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz. Following the attacks, the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issued a swift advisory for British citizens to shelter in place, escalating fears and uncertainties among travelers in the region.
Caution With Travel

According to the FCDO, advisories were released around 3:30 PM BST on June 23, urging British nationals to exercise caution until the situation stabilized. This led to what the British embassy in Qatar described as an “abundance of caution,” aligning with similar security measures taken by the U.S. for its nationals. However, by 9:30 PM BST, the advisory was lifted, allowing residents and travelers to resume their activities while urging vigilance. An FCDO statement emphasized, “Ongoing hostilities in the region and between Israel and Iran have the potential to deteriorate further, quickly and without warning.” The potential for continued disruption in travel, characterized by short-notice airspace closures and unexpected flight cancellations, remains a significant concern. Travelers are encouraged to stay updated via the FCDO’s travel advice page and local news outlets.
Left in Limbo

Despite Qatar Airways announcing on social media that they confirmed the reinstatement of flights soon after reopening, the reality paints a grimmer picture. “Our focus at this time is to help our passengers return home or reach their onward journey safely and smoothly,” they noted. However, weeks later, the backlog of delayed or cancelled flights has – and continues to – pile up. Travelers now face complicated situations, with many left in limbo. The situation is exacerbated by ongoing issues regarding accommodation and meals for those impacted. The FCDO has established explicit travel rights for passengers affected by the flight disruptions, which include alternative flight arrangements or refunds in some instances. For travelers who were already in Doha when the airspace closed, their rights remain enforced under U.K. law. The FCDO clearly states, “If you are in Doha, you must be provided with a hotel and meals until you can be flown out.” However, delays at airports resulting from this crisis mean airlines are overwhelmed and struggling to offer adequate care.
