An 18-year-old Florida man is sitting in jail after completely losing it over a missing order of Chicken McNuggets—and calling McDonald’s three separate times to threaten a shooting, deputies say.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Dayton Wayne Schaffer is now facing felony charges after allegedly using his phone to make violent threats because his $5 meal didn’t come with the nuggets he ordered.
The bizarre incident began around 1 a.m. Wednesday, when McDonald’s employees reported receiving multiple threatening calls from a man saying he would “shoot this s— up.” In the arrest affidavit, deputies say the fast food staff locked the doors and called police, genuinely afraid for their safety.
Sheriff Grady Judd, known for his no-nonsense and often sarcastic press briefings, didn’t hold back when announcing the arrest.
“This guy acted like a McNut,” Judd said in a video. “He didn’t get his McNuggets, so he used his McPhone to make a McThreat to McDonald’s.”
Investigators traced the phone number back to Schaffer, and his mother confirmed it was his. Deputies found him later at a friend’s house, where he reportedly admitted to making the calls. He claimed it was just a joke and said he never intended to hurt anyone.
Still, the threats were taken seriously. Schaffer is now charged with making a false report about a bomb or weapon of mass destruction, and using a two-way communication device to commit a felony.
Sheriff Judd added that the McDonald’s manager had even offered to give Schaffer his nuggets if he returned—but instead of taking the offer, Schaffer allegedly responded with more profanity.
“His rant went on and on and on,” Judd said.
Schaffer remains in the Polk County Jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 5.
