(NewsNation) — Millions of Americans are hitting the road, skies and seas for the Fourth of July, with the American Automobile Association predicting a record 72.2 million people will travel domestically.
More than 61 million travelers are expected to drive, setting a new record for holiday road travel.
For once, gas prices may be a relief. GasBuddy projects a national average of $3.15 per gallon, the lowest in four years and nearly 35 cents cheaper than last year. That drop could save Americans about $500 million in fuel costs this weekend, according to AAA.
Airfare averages $810 round trip for Fourth of July weekend
Air travel is also breaking records this weekend, with nearly 6 million passengers expected to fly, the highest ever for Independence Day. However, it comes at a price: The average domestic round-trip flight now costs $810, a 4% increase from last year, according to AAA data.
With the holiday falling on a Friday, many are stretching their plans into a longer vacation. AAA estimates 7 million more people will travel this Fourth of July compared to 2019, meaning congested highways and crowded airports are likely across the country.
Beyond driving and flying, about 4.7 million Americans are expected to travel by bus, train or cruise ship.
AAA: Florida is most desired destination for July Fourth travelers
Florida remains a top destination for holiday travelers, with three of the 10 most popular spots located within the Sunshine State. Orlando ranks as AAA’s number one travel destination this Fourth of July.
From beaches to cruises to iconic fireworks shows, travelers are seeking out classic summer experiences. Popular picks include Miami, Hawaii, Boston and New York, and Alaskan cruises are also in high demand.
